Why Do Photos Get Larger When Sent in Email?

Why Do Photos Get Larger When Sent in Email?

You look at a photo on your computer and it nicely fills your computer screen. But when you attach it to an email and send it, it appears much larger than the screen on the recipient's computer. Learn why this happens and how to fix it.

Different Display Environments

Different software displays photos differently. Photo viewing software can resize photos to allow you to see them well on your computer. The photo may be much larger than your screen, but it doesn't look that way in your photo software. Email programs and websites do not resize a photo, so once you've sent it via email or uploaded it to a website it will appear in its actual size and therefore may look different from your view in photo viewing software.

Photo Resolution

The resolution of a photo is shown as two numbers with an "x" between them, meaning the number of pixels wide by the number of pixels tall.

Photo Size and Megapixels

The number of megapixels of an image is the number you get when you multiply the width and the height of an image. So, a common image resolution of 3266 x 2450 equals approximately 8 million pixels, or 8 megapixels.

Computer Monitor Resolution

Your computer's screen has a much lower resolution than a typical image. A common monitor resolution is 1280 x 1024. You can check what your screen resolution is by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Personalize" and then "Display Settings." The resolution will be displayed in the dialog box that comes up, and you may be able to change it slightly. You can see that an 8 megapixel image is much larger than the megapixels of your average computer.

How to Change a Photo's Size

When you view images in your image viewing software, you should see a resolution setting. Select "image size" or "image properties" if you don't see it on the screen. Use an image editing application to resize your photo to something smaller--keeping the proportions the same so the image isn't distorted. Save it as a copy under another name so you still have access to the larger photo. You will need the larger size if you want to print the photo, since printing requires a higher resolution than displaying it on a computer screen or in an email.
