Styles of Portraits

Styles of Portraits

Portraits are a widely recognized style of photography. The are used to keep a visual record of oneself, tell stories and convey personality. The rules for portrait photography are few and the possibilities are endless. To determine which style of portraiture to use, examine your specific situation. When taking a portrait, consider its purpose and decide what you are trying to convey with the picture.

Traditional Portraits

Traditional portrait photography is most commonly seen in children's school pictures. They are also often used as headshots by many types of professionals. This type of portrait typically places emphasis on the subject's face and expressions, but can also include full-body shots. Traditional photography mostly takes place in a controlled environment, such as in a studio with plain backdrops, so the viewer is drawn to the subject rather than the surroundings.

Contemporary Portraits

Contemporary portraiture is another widely used form of photography. It appeals to photographers who enjoy taking a more sporadic and artistic approach to portraiture. The style is similar to traditional portraiture in that its focus is on the subject. However, the contemporary style is much more boundless. It does not follow rules and offers greater insight into the personality of the subject. The use of candid photography is often found in this style, as are non-traditional poses that help to shed light on the inner personality of the subject.

Visual Storytelling Portraiture

Stories can be told through a photograph.
Stories can be told through a photograph.

Visual storytelling is much like photo journalism with personal effect. The idea of these portraits is to convey a story through the photograph by using the surrounding scenery with a subject. It often shows the lifestyle of an individual in her surroundings with an intense expression on the subject. They are usually thought-provoking and can often trigger emotional responses.

Group Portraits

Group portraits have a wide range of uses, from photographing sports teams to taking family pictures. They always have two or more subjects in them with the point of the photograph to offer its viewers a sense of the relationship between the subjects. In smaller groups, the people in the photograph are usually interacting with each other. Large groups, such as a sports team, are usually lined up. Most group portraits are posed, but can happen spontaneously as well.
