Cool Eye Effects

Cool Eye Effects

It has been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and that maxim is especially true in the realm of digital photography. Sometimes the difference between a great portrait and a disappointing one is all in the eyes, but with a few tweaks using photo editing software, you can achieve some really cool eye effects. Those with access to Photoshop or other similar software can do a wide range of manipulations to the eyes of their digital images, but for folks without those programs, there are high-quality services online that can perform many similar functions.

Changing eye color with Photoshop

Change the color of eyes in a digital photograph by simply highlighting it and tweaking the shades with the "Color Balance" option. Open the photo in Photoshop (or a similar program), then select the "Polygonal Lasso" tool by clicking on the "Lasso" tool and holding it down until a pop-up menu appears, then click the "Polygonal Lasso." Select the iris of the eye by clicking points encircling it with the "Polygonal Lasso" until you finally re-click the first point you chose, which will select the entire eye. Un-select the dark pupil in the center of your selected iris by holding down the "option" key on your keyboard while clicking around it with the "Polygonal Lasso" tool (which will be marked with a negative sign). Drag down the "Select" menu, then choose "Feather," then enter "5" for the amount of pixel feathering. This will allow for a smoother change in the eye color that looks more natural. Pull down the "Image" menu, then select "Adjustments," then "Color Balance." Move the sliders for each color range slowly back and forth to change the color of the eye until you get the effect you like best. Click "OK" when done, then "Save."

Fixing "red eye" with Picnik

Picnik is a browser-based utility that allows users to upload photos and edit them online without needing photo manipulation software. The service is free, and the interface is simple and intuitive. To remove the "red eye" effect that can sometimes ruin an otherwise perfect photo, surf to Picnik.com and click the "Upload a Photo" button. Select your photo in the pop-up menu that appears, then click "Open." Your photo will now appear in the workspace at the center of your browser window. Click on the "Red Eye" button along the top of the workspace, then choose between "Human" and "Furball" in the pop-up window that appears to specify the type of eyes you want fixed (people or pets). Use your mouse to hover the crosshairs cursor over each eye, then click. The red eye will automatically be reduced and corrected. Click the "Save & Share," then fill out the information for the photo and choose format and quality. Click "Save Photo," then designate where on your computer you would like to save the photo.

Making crazy eyes with Pixlr.com

In your Internet browser, go to Pixlr.com and upload a photo by clicking the "Open Image Editor" link, then click "Open image from computer" when prompted. Browse the images on your hard drive, then choose one and click "Open." Choose the "Lasso" tool in the toolbox on the left side of the window, then click and drag a wide circle around one of the eyes you would like to edit. Don't outline too close to the eye; circle some space around the eye as well. Drag down the "Filters" menu, then choose one of the filters listed, such as "Water Swirl," and see the effect it has on the eye you have highlighted. Drag down the "File" menu and choose "Undo" to reverse the effect, then try other filters to sample the results. Once you are satisfied, highlight the other eye with the "Lasso" tool and repeat the process. Drag down the "File" menu and choose "Save" once you have finished.

How to Set Preferences in GIMP

How to Set Preferences in GIMP

In my opinion, GIMP is the best free, open source photography program. It is very complex, offers much of the same functionality of the expensive and popular Adobe Photoshop and is essentially bulletproof in operation. I have been using GIMP for three years and it has never crashed or stalled. Since it is open source, however, it is fairly complex and offers a lot of customization options. It also means that some of the help and options are written in geek speak and requires some experimentation and dedication from the user. In this article I will discuss some of the basic settings and options that you can set in the GIMP preferences window.

Instructions

    1
    Environment

Open GIMP (keep in mind if you are running it on a Mac you will need to have X-11 installed). Once you have opened the program select PREFERENCES from the EDIT tab to open the preferences toolbox. Notice that there are 11 main adjustment tabs and a number of sub-tabs under some of the choices. Here I will only discuss the most important settings, but you should carefully review each tab and familiarize yourself with the options. I will not discuss devices since it will be different for each computer configuration. Think carefully about the number of UNDO levels you require and the size of the thumbnails. I prefer a large number of UNDO levels since I am not the greatest airbrush artist.

    2
    User Interface

Configure keyboard shortcuts, enable previews and adjust layer behavior with the USER INTERFACE tab. If you are familiar with Photoshop shortcut keys you can modify your GIMP keyboard shortcuts to emulate Photoshop shortcuts.

    3
    Display

Change factors controlling the GIMP display window with the DISPLAY tab. You can enter your monitor resolution manually and calibrate your monitor or let GIMP handle this automatically. If you are using a manual configuration it will change your monitor behavior, so be careful with the adjustment since it could impact the way other applications behave.

    4
    Appearance

Change the way the editing window appears and how it behaves with APPEARANCE, a sub-tab under image windows. You can apply templates and see the templates that are loaded under TEMPLATES. Notice you can have different selections based on FULL SCREEN or NORMAL modes. For example, in full screen mode you may choose not to have tool bars, scroll bars or status bars, so your view is unobstructed.

    5
    Color Management

Specify the rendering intents and profiles you want GIMP to use with COLOR MANAGEMENT. You can specify a monitor profile and a CMYK profile for your printer and specify the rendering intents for the screen, proof and printer. You can also specify which behavior you want GIMP to use when you open a file. If you are working mainly in a print environment you may want to change it from the default RGB color to CMYK color or LAB color. Most people will want to leave this in the default RGB mode.

    6
    Folders

Open the FOLDERS tab. You will notice a variety of specific folders and each one will offer options that you can check or uncheck. The folder pictured is for BRUSHES and it shows the different BRUSH options that are available. You can check or uncheck options to expand or limit your choices in the application. There are a lot of settings to change in GIMP and you need to be careful when making changes that will impact the image.

How to Sell Photos on the Web

Selling photographs on the Internet expands the photographer's sales arena to reach customers around the globe. In the Sept. 2, 2008, issue of "Forbes," Taylor Buley states that selling photographs online "is an increasingly lush business." Various types of photo marketplaces are available online. The top three ways to sell photos on the Web are: specific artist sites that offer space for a percentage of the sale price, stock photo agencies (each with different requirements) that pay royalties to photographers for usage, and photographer's websites where the photographer sells directly to the client.

Instructions

    1

Create a sample portfolio for the Internet. Stock agencies require samples of photography in various categories. They want to see a cross-section of the photographer's work, skill and style. Art gallery sites will not ask for a review of work, but the photographer will need the samples to put on the site under their logo. The same goes for the photographer selling photos on their own website.

    2

Size the images to the specifications required by the stock agency or image marketplace.

    3

Organize image files into categories. Once the photographer is selling his work on the Internet, images will be found through keyword searches. It pays to give some thought to framing categories. Once they are set up, they are hard to change. This is the framework for an image database. Having an organized image database will help the photographer track images and usage.

Apply for an Employee Identification Number (EIN). This step is for United States residents. The photographer will need either an EIN number or a social security number for tax-reporting purposes.

    5

Set up an account to receive payment and royalties for the photos. Paypal is widely accepted and easy to set up. Other electronic payment services are available, including services for international payments. Generally, stock sites prefer to pay photographers electronically. Most will offer the option of payment by check, but payments are slower and the minimum the photographer has to make in royalties is usually higher before the site will make a payout.

Fill out the registration information for the image-resell site. Make sure to specify payment preferences and tax ID information.

    7

Upload the required number of sample images (choose images from your sample portfolio) for review. The average time period for review is seven to ten days. Once the photographer is approved by the stock agency, images can be uploaded at any time. For image marketplaces that do not require reviews of work, images can be uploaded immediately.
