Fake Food Tricks

Fake Food Tricks

Food as seen on television and billboard ads almost always looks delectable and perfect in its presentation. A lesson to learn here, however, is that food photography is as much an art of deception as it is of presentation. In fact, what you see in food photographs is oftentimes not at all edible. Real food will whither and look unflattering under studio lights, so photographers often conjure inventive substitutes to look like the real thing.

Ice Cubes

Special effects companies, such as Trengrove in New York City, sell fake ice cubes made of sculpted acrylic, plastic or pyrex glass for the purpose of studio and photo shoots. These fake (and therefore obviously non-melting) ice cubes can often be found floating in drinks or put on display. Also, ice powder is also commonly used with water added to make a slushy solution. This slushy solution often sticks to drink glasses and beer bottles as moisture.

Sauces and Moisture

Motor oil is often used as a substitute for dark syrups. So when a picture depicts chocolate syrup drizzled over ice cream, it is almost always motor oil being poured over either dyed mashed potatoes, bananas or scoops of lard cleverly sculpted to appear like ice cream. White glue will often be used for lightly colored sauces and to imitate milk.

Glycerin, a toxic substance, is used often to add moisture to lots of various foods to make them look appealing and fresh. It may be painted over seafood, for example, to make it appear as if it's freshly caught, or sprayed over "freshly rinsed" salad greens. Spray deodorant is also used to give a frosted veneer to various food.

Meat Styling

According to Pixiq, a blowtorch is often applied to fake steaks and meats in order to brown the edges. Brown shoe polish is applied to meat surfaces for a fresh, out-of-the-oven appearance. Cardboard squares may also be used for small platforms so the meat gets center-stage and does not mix in with other ingredients on the plate. Incense sticks, smoked pellets, or even a smoking cigarette will often be used behind the meat to make it look "piping hot."

Other Tricks

Real alcohol is rarely used in a studio, but non-alcoholic substitutes often are. Apple juice or tea may stand in as bourbon; champagne depicted on television shows, movies, or advertisements may be ginger ale.

Food photographers can produce the illusion of a larger portion size just enough to remain in good standing with the Truth in Advertising laws. They may cut a back portion of a burger and open it to appear larger before the camera. Different camera angles and zooms may make the product look larger than it really is.

How to Crop a Portrait

How to Crop a Portrait

Some professional photographers spend their entire careers depicting the human face. For these individuals, every little nuance like lighting, facial expression and makeup is important. Also of major consideration, is the relationship of the subjects head to the edge of the picture frame. Here, viewers might find a white studio background or the subject may be posed outdoors with a garden or grove of trees sufficing as a background. No matter what the occasion, a portrait can be cropped later in the darkroom or computer if, and only if, the background is too large or dominant in the picture.

Instructions

    1

Scan the image on a professional quality scanner at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch or greater. (This step is not necessary if the picture is already in digital form.)

    2

Choose a file extension. Jpg or png are the most common files for images. But if your scanner uses a TIFF file, you may want to keep the image in that format unless (or until) you want to publish online. The same is true for the .raw or any other possible file extension available with the myriad of digital cameras that use a RAW system.

    3

Give the file a name. Most cameras and some scanners automatically provide a numerical title. You will want to change this to a familiar word name, like "familyportait" or "Emmasportrait".

    4

Open the picture in your favorite software program. Some of the available choices include Picasa, Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and Inkscape.

    5

Make any color corrections or other changes before cropping.

    6

Select the crop tool. Location of this tool may vary depending on program.

    7

Adjust the crop box, a rectangular shape of dotted lines, with the cursor until it fits around the subject in the way that you want the picture to look.

    8

Select the crop command. Again this will vary according to program.

    9

Open the Save As selection and give the picture its own distinct name, separate from the name of the original file.

    10

Save the picture to the appropriate folder without downsizing the picture.

Ideas for Making Cottage-themed Calendars

Ideas for Making Cottage-themed Calendars

Handmade calendars with a cottage theme are pleasing and personal gifts to give family, friends and business associates. Calendars can be printed commercially online, at print centers, and at home on an ink-jet printer.

Select a Specific Theme

Cottage calendars are most effective if they revolve around a simple theme with design variations representing characteristics of each month. Create a list of potential cottage themes for your calendar such as roses, arbors, the vegetable garden, front porches, or cottage recipes. Consider each of the 12 months and determine whether a unique photograph and design within your theme can be created for each month. Vary the design and colors based on the seasons.

Use Decorative Elements

Add decorative elements surrounding photographs to add interest and extra cottage style to a calendar. Many publishing companies, such as Dover Publications, offer royalty-free graphics for use by designers and artists. Designs are available in black and white for easy photocopying or on CD to use with graphics software. Search for graphics that complement a cottage-style calendar, including Victorian decorative elements, Art Nouveau and Art Deco borders, old-fashioned floral illustrations, and seasonally themed graphics.

Use Software Templates

Many software packages, including Microsoft Word, have templates for relatively easy production of printed calendars. Use the templates as presented or redesign them with custom colors and graphic elements. You can add your own photographs from your digital camera or photographic prints. If working with prints, scan and convert photos to JPG format with a photo-editing software program such as Adobe Photoshop or Elements.

Use Color Sets

Calendars are most interesting if each page reflects the spirit of the season it represents. Use a limited color palette for each month to create interest and narrative in your cottage-style calendar. Experiment with complementary (opposite) color sets for vibrant seasonal combinations, such as yellows and purples for spring and oranges and blues for autumn months. Try using harmonious (analogous) colors to represent specific months such as yellow, lime green and deep green for spring. According to color expert Jill Morton at Color Matters.com, analogous colors are any three colors which sit together side by side on a color wheel.

Use a Photocopier

If you dont work with a computer, photocopy the date sections of an existing calendar, then cut and paste photographic and graphic elements from magazines, cards, wallpaper, or wrapping paper onto the calendar pages. Add your own drawings and other decorative elements. Your imagination is your only limitation. Photocopy the resulting collage in as many duplicates as calendars you want to produce. Staple your calendar pages together, or have them inexpensively spiral- or fabric-bound at a copy center for a more professional-looking result.

How to Print Photos on Metal

How to Print Photos on Metal

The appeal for printing photos on metal is that photos will have a subtle luminescence not fount in regular print photos. However, printing photos on metal cannot be done with a normal household printer. Dyes must be precisely infused into aluminum to achieve this effect, and a finish is added to preserve the image. While photos printed on metallic cardstock can be accomplished at print shops such as Office Max or FedEx, if you're looking for the professional, metallic sheen of dyed aluminum, it is easy and relatively inexpensive to buy prints online.

Build a Graphic Light Box

Even with the ongoing technological advances and the growth of the digital age, there is still a need for graphic designers to go "old school" to make use of light boxes. These boxes can be used to typeset many things, including for instance space specific forms. These forms would need to have exact spacing to fit with the printout from specific programs. The best way to line up things precisely is to use a light box so that you can put one item over the other to achieve 100% exactness.

Instructions

    1

Remove the lid or top of the box you have chosen to use (plastic storage or cardboard) and place the lighting source inside the box.

    2

Cut a small hole in the side of your box with your cutting tool. This is to allow the cord for the light to come outside the box. if you have a battery operated lighting source, you may skip this step and move on to number three, please.

    3

Place the glass or Plexiglas on top of the open box. Fit it snugly to the sides.

    4

Tape the glass or plexiglas to the sides of the box with duct tape, gorilla tape or electrical tape. This is a safety precaution.
