How to Crop a Portrait

How to Crop a Portrait

Some professional photographers spend their entire careers depicting the human face. For these individuals, every little nuance like lighting, facial expression and makeup is important. Also of major consideration, is the relationship of the subjects head to the edge of the picture frame. Here, viewers might find a white studio background or the subject may be posed outdoors with a garden or grove of trees sufficing as a background. No matter what the occasion, a portrait can be cropped later in the darkroom or computer if, and only if, the background is too large or dominant in the picture.

Instructions

    1

Scan the image on a professional quality scanner at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch or greater. (This step is not necessary if the picture is already in digital form.)

    2

Choose a file extension. Jpg or png are the most common files for images. But if your scanner uses a TIFF file, you may want to keep the image in that format unless (or until) you want to publish online. The same is true for the .raw or any other possible file extension available with the myriad of digital cameras that use a RAW system.

    3

Give the file a name. Most cameras and some scanners automatically provide a numerical title. You will want to change this to a familiar word name, like "familyportait" or "Emmasportrait".

    4

Open the picture in your favorite software program. Some of the available choices include Picasa, Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and Inkscape.

    5

Make any color corrections or other changes before cropping.

    6

Select the crop tool. Location of this tool may vary depending on program.

    7

Adjust the crop box, a rectangular shape of dotted lines, with the cursor until it fits around the subject in the way that you want the picture to look.

    8

Select the crop command. Again this will vary according to program.

    9

Open the Save As selection and give the picture its own distinct name, separate from the name of the original file.

    10

Save the picture to the appropriate folder without downsizing the picture.
