Set up your camera on a sturdy tripod. Night photography requires long exposures, so you'll need a tripod to eliminate camera movement and unwanted blurring.
2Set your camera to manual mode to gain access to slower shutter speeds, not available in automatic or portrait mode. This mode will give you full control over your exposure settings and focusing, as well.
3Set your camera's sensor to its highest sensitivity number or ISO.
4Attach a lens hood to your camera's lens if you have one. This tool will reduce unwanted flares from bright lights outside the frame.
5Set up a remote control or shutter-release cable if you have one. These tools will eliminate the slight camera shake that occurs when you press down the shutter button. If you don't have a remote or cable release, try using your camera's timer.
6Frame your subject and focus the image. If you're shooting bright, stationary lights such as distant buildings, you will be able to focus the image more easily. If you're shooting a darker area, use a flashlight to illuminate the subject long enough to focus on it.
7Select a slow shutter speed and a wide aperture setting to allow enough light to pass through the camera. Because of the difficulty of metering at night, you'll have to experiment with several different exposures. Take multiple shots of the same subject or composition with different exposure settings and compare the results. You might find that you like the image better when slightly overexposed or underexposed.
