Weather scapes can denote drama or lend a gentle melancholy feel to your photography. Learning to shoot great photos means being a weather chaser. The rainbow disappears in minutes, the storm clouds race and lightening is gone in a blink of an eye. Preparing ahead is your best defense. Keep watch of the weather reports and have all your gear ready. Learn to set up and shoot quickly. For every kind of weather scape there is a way to shoot the sky.
Photographing Stormy Weather
When shooting to capture a weather scape of storm clouds forget the rule of thirds but do not leave out a focal point. Instead of dividing the photo into a grid of thirds with the focal point being off to one side pick a focal point such as waves, rock formations or anything that will act as your focal point to the storm clouds. Remember to protect your camera with a rain cover and carrying a chamois to wipe the lens if needed. Use a tripod to reduce shake.
Lightning shots
To capture lightning you have to be prepared in advance. Set your camera to a low ISO and slow shutter speed. Using a remote to control the camera's shutter can be a worthy investment in terms of safety. Always use a tripod to shoot lightening if possible. Protect your equipment the same as you would for rain.
Shooting the Fog
Protect your camera equipment the same as you would for rain. Fog can wash the color out of a photo. To compensate for this use an ISO of 100 and use your camera's manual mode. Use your tripod for stability and play with the exposure until you get the effect you want.
Capturing a Sunset
Set up your equipment before the sun is scheduled to set. Pick a location with an interesting focal point. Water reflects a setting sun and gives the photo depth or choose an outcrop of boulders, a stand of trees or a sculpture. Anything that will give a feeling of depth to your photo. Shoot quickly as the colors and cloud formation will change fast. Use of an ND filter or color enhancing filter will bring out more vibrant colors.
Photographing in The Cold
In cold weather make sure the batteries for your camera are fully charged. Cold weather will drain the batteries quickly. Change lenses outdoors to avoid moisture from getting inside the camera body. Let the camera adjust slowly to temperature changes such as when you bring it in from the outside. Set your camera to the snow or winter setting if it has this setting. Underexpose the photo adjusting exposure by increments until you achieve desired affect. Try shooting with a flash or back light and without. There are many ways to shoot snow to get different results. So don't be afraid to experiment.
