How do I Choose a Mat for a Black & White Picture?

How do I Choose a Mat for a Black & White Picture?

Black and white pictures capture the details, contrasts and textures not found in color photographs. Hanging black and white pictures in your home or office can add elegance and class to the existing decor without creating awkward color schemes. When framing a black and white picture, use a high-quality print. A black and white frame can help add an artistic element to the photo helping bring out its finest qualities.

Instructions

    1

Choose a frame that is at least two standard frame sizes larger than the picture to give enough room for the mat. If the photograph is 4 inches by 6 inches, choose an 8-inch by 10-inch frame at the very least.

    2

Decide whether the mat will blend with the frame or contrast it. Blending or contrast are done using the different shades of black and white.

    3

Choose a darker inner mat for a picture with excess white areas near the edges. A lighter interior mat is best to frame pictures with more dark edges.

    4

Try different swatch patterns to see which shade best complements the picture and its frame. This is art, so a certain degree of subjectivity is applied as to what you think looks best. Try a few different swatches and have friends and family rate which "looks best."
