How to Make a Homemade Soft-Focus Filter

When using a soft-focus filter on a film or digital camera, it gives the pictures a hazy, dreamlike quality. Commercial filters are easy to find, but there are several do-it-yourself options that can be used by those who are short on cash.

Instructions

Cling Wrap

    1

Tear off a small section of cling wrap. Make sure that the piece is big enough to cover the camera lens with a little extra to wrap around the sides.

    2

Stretch the cling wrap taut over the lens of the camera. Make sure that there are no creases or wrinkles, as these will show up in photographs.

    3

Secure the cling wrap to the camera using an elastic band. If possible, use an elastic band that is big enough to wrap at least twice to ensure that the plastic will not shift during shooting.

    4

Add a small drop of baby oil to the fingers or a dry cloth. Wipe the oil on the plastic over the camera lens. Different smudges on the plastic will create different effects (ie: circular motion versus straight across), so experiment with different methods until you find one that works best.

    5

Carefully remove the elastic band and cling wrap when you are finished shooting. The makeshift filter can be thrown away.

Pantyhose

    6

Cut off a section of the pantyhose using a pair of scissors. Make sure that the section is big enough to cover the camera lens with some room to spare on the sides.

    7

Stretch the piece of pantyhose taut over the camera lens.

    8

Secure the pantyhose by wrapping the elastic band around the camera lens. Make sure that the homemade filter is secure and will not shift around during shooting.
