How to Build a Pinhole Video Camera

How to Build a Pinhole Video Camera

A pinhole video camera is a homemade movie camera. Any camera is essentially a box that allows light to enter through a small hole and land on a piece of film. The hole itself is like a window, and the image outside the window is fixed on the film. In video cameras, the film moves from one frame to another to allow the recording of motion. Follow a few steps to build a pinhole video camera and start making your own movies.

Instructions

    1

Bore a small hole in the center of the cover of the box. This will be the "lens" of your camera. The size of the hole should be adjusted according to the depth of the box. The shallower the box, the smaller the hole.

    2

Cut a hole near one end of the top of the box. The hole should be just wide enough for the dowel. Trim the dowel to an appropriate length. The bottom of the dowel should rest on the bottom of the box. The top of the dowel should extend a couple of inches above the hole in the side. You will be unrolling your film onto the dowel by turning the dowel's exposed end.

    3

Form a compartment on the side of the box opposite the dowel. Glue in upright pieces of wood or plastic to make a rectangular shape that is just large enough to contain a roll of 35 mm film. The film will sit in this compartment and be unrolled across one of the partitions. You will pull the edge of the film across to the dowel.

    4

Wrap the end of the film around the dowel and roll it around until it is secure. Do not turn too much of the film around the dowel because the film you expose is useless. Place the cover back on the box. Cut a small square of paper, cardboard or plastic and place it over the hole in the front of the camera. Secure it with tape. To use your camera, open this covering and roll the film by turning the dowel.
