How to Photograph Running Water

How to Photograph Running Water

Photographing water can produce some visually interesting results. Two options to attempt to capture would be to stop the water in motion (to freeze it), or to capture the waters motion, which will create a blurred effect. While it can be trial and error, knowing a bit about your cameras shutter speed can help control your results. The shutter speed controls the length of time that the cameras shutter stays open for an exposure. The results are the same in a digital camera or a film camera. However, being able to set your camera to manual setting is required.

Instructions

    1

Read your camera's owners manual to help you set your camera in manual mode as well as how to adjust the shutter speed. This function varies from camera to camera.

    2

Stop the waters motion and freeze it in place by using a very fast shutter speed. Typically something above 1/200th of a second will give you a better chance at the results you desire.

    3

Create a soft blur of the water with a longer exposure. You are attempting to capture the movement of the water, which will cause it to blur and appear soft or mystical. To do so you will need a longer exposure time: 1/30th of a second or slower. You may want to use a tripod to steady the camera.

    4

Practice with your camera in your kitchen using the faucet and running water.
