Tricks for a 35mm Camera

Tricks for a 35mm Camera

Although film cameras have been largely supplanted by digital models, many art photographs continue to film those that take 35mm. The smallest commercially available film format, 35mm film is still capable of producing high-quality images with subtle color tones. These images, however, can be greatly enhanced if the photographer is well versed in the tricks of his camera.

Watch Your Parallax

It's a common misconception that the image a photographer sees in their viewfinder--the little window they place their eye against--is the image printed on the photographic negative. In fact, this is only true of one type of 35mm camera, the single lens reflex, in which the precise image that goes through the camera's lens is mirrored into the viewfinder. The other cameras, including the double-lens reflex and popular point-and-shoot view cameras, use a separate lens for the viewfinder, resulting in a slightly different image. This error is known as "parallax" error. Through trial and error, a photographer can understand the precise nature of their camera's parallax error--for example, the image might appear higher up in the viewfinder than on the negative--and compensate for it.

Know Your Film

Not all 35mm film is created equally. The precise composition and distribution of the photosensitive chemicals coating a film negative can, in fact, differ very much between companies. This difference can be reflected in a film's ISO number, a measurement of its sensitivity to light. However, even films with the same ISO can react very differently depending on their manufacturer, resulting in images with marked differences in color, saturation and contrast. Similarly, cameras, depending on their idiosyncrasies, react differently to different stocks. Test a number of 35mm films on the same image at the same time and compare the results. This will help you determine the film that best fits your camera and your needs.

Use The Magic Hour

Unlike the images taken off digital cameras, the images produced by 35mm cameras can be subject to only limited manipulation of their light and color. This makes it particularly important for pictures seeking that special luminous quality, the light present when the picture is taken be perfect. Many of the most memorable images have been caught at the so-called "magic" hour--the time early in the morning or late at night when the light is particularly warm and diffuse. When trying to capture that gorgeous outdoor scene, wait until that window of time to nail it.
