How to Create a Portfolio as a Fashion Photographer

How to Create a Portfolio as a Fashion Photographer

A fashion photographer takes high quality and high resolution images of clothes, accessories and models for magazines, designers and fashion houses. A portfolio is basically just a collection of the photographer's best work. It can either be an online portfolio in the form of a website that people can visit and view, or it can be prints of the images placed in a folder. No matter what form it's in, the portfolio must showcase the photographer's skill and versatility.

Instructions

    1

Have photographs to put into your portfolio. If you are just starting out as a fashion photographer, it will take time to build a portfolio. Every time you shoot fashion photos for a publication or designer, you will have pictures to put into your portfolio. Over time you will have plenty of different types of images to show.

    2

Pick and choose the best images to include in your portfolio. After every photo shoot, choose one or two photos that truly stand out and showcase your talent. If any photos happen to be published, definitely include those in your portfolio. Published photos show that your work has been acknowledged in the media.

    3

Create an online portfolio. You may have to hire a web designer to give your site a polished and professional look. Upload your best images online and give out the web address so that people can view your portfolio just by going on the Internet.

    4

Organize your fashion photos into a folder. Buy a discreet three-ring folder and laminated sheets. Put your best fashion photos into the plastic sheets so that they don't get damaged in any way. The sheets should also be hole-punched. This way your photos will be organized, and be able to be viewed by many people without being torn or soiled.

    5

Organize your fashion photos into a photo album that can hold large 8 x 11 prints, as an alternative to a folder.

How to Make Sepia-toned Images

How to Make Sepia-toned Images

Manipulating your photographs can be a fun and artistic way to express yourself and the message you are trying to convey through your photos. One of the oldest and most common techniques for creating an alternate look to photographs is the sepia-toned image. This can enhance your photographs and is an effect that is available in most photography software.

Instructions

Converting to Sepia

    1

Choose a program. Depending on your needs, you can choose between manipulating your photograph with a photo-viewing program, such as iPhoto or Preview, or with a professional program, such as Aperture or Adobe Photoshop. When making this decision, consider if you just want to convert your photo to sepia quickly or if you want complete control over the exact sepia tone you give your photograph. For a quick conversion, use iPhoto or Preview. For complete control, use Aperture or Adobe Photoshop.

    2

If you are taking the fast route of using a program like iPhoto or Preview to convert your image, then you can simply open your photo in either of those programs, bring up the photo editor, and then raise the sepia tones. If you are using Aperture or Photoshop, more steps are needed. After you open your photo in a more advanced photo-editing program, you first need to convert the image to grayscale. This will remove all color, leaving your photo looking like a black and white photograph.

    3

Once you have converted your image to grayscale, you can apply a sepia filter. In most photo editing programs, the filters are found in a tab on the menu bar titled "filters" or "effects." When you open the filters menu, a list of available filters will drop down. Choose a sepia filter and then your program should allow you to manipulate the filter. Using the preview as a guide, adjust the variables until you have the exact sepia tone you desire and then apply it to your photograph.

How to Upload Images to Stock Photo Websites

Uploading and selling your digital photos and images on stock photography websites can be a good way to earn a little extra money while gaining exposure as a photographer. Most stock photography sites allow you to register to sell your photos on the site for free, and pay you a percentage of all sales your photos generate. You must own the photos you want to sell on the site. You cannot sell someone else's photos unless you have the copyrights to the photos.

Instructions

    1

Choose the stock photography site where you want to upload. Popular sites include istockphoto.com, shutterpoint.com and dreamstime.com.

    2

Go to the site and create an account to sell photos. Some sites have different accounts for buying stock photos as opposed to selling them, so be sure to click the "register" or "sign up" button that corresponds to creating an account for selling your photos. Most sites are free to sign up for selling photos. Other sites require you to purchase storage space to store your photos online, though these sites usually pay a higher commission percentage for photos you sell.

    3

Complete all additional required information (the required information varies by site). Once you create your account, some sites will ask you to take a quiz to make sure you are a legitimate person wanting to sell photos. Other sites will require you to fill out copyright forms to ensure you have the copyrights to your photos. The steps vary between sites, but the required information is generally not difficult to complete.

    4

Upload your photos. Most sites will have an "upload" button within your account once your account is up and running. Click the "upload" button and use the site's upload tool to upload your photos. Some upload tools allow you to upload multiple photos simultaneously, but require you to install the upload software. If this is the case, install the upload software and then proceed with uploading your photos.

    5

Add keywords and set prices (if the site allows you to) for your photos. Some sites will set the price for you. Others will allow you to name your own price. If your photo does not sell after several weeks, consider revising your keywords so people can find it easier, or lowering your price to make it more attractive to buyers.

How to Fix Photos With a Channel Mixer

A channel mixer is a tool found only in photography editing software. It is an application that allows you to virtually separate the three or four channels of a photo, and change them on a percentage scale. The use of channels changes the saturation of color depending on the channel mode. The channel mixer is primarily used for converting photos to black and white, as it allows the operator to maintain or enhance absent levels of contrast and detail. It also enhances color outputs in colored photographs the same way a colored lens filter would when attached to the lens of a camera.

Instructions

    1

Understand RGB and CMYK. At any time you can alter the mode at which your photo software processes your image. These modes include grayscale (black and white) and the color modes RGB and CMYK. RGB stands for red, green and blue, while CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. You can change the mode in Photoshop by clicking the "Image" bar on the top drop-down menu, and selecting "Mode." The differences between RGB and CMYK when using a channel mixer are the colors that are being manipulated. RGB is more commonly used than CMYK when adjusting color components of a photograph.

    2

In Photoshop, there are many ways in which to convert an image to black and white, and they will all produce variant results. To use the channel mixer to turn an image to black and white, first access the channel mixer screen. In the drop-down tool bar select "Image" followed by "Adjustments" followed by "Channel Mixer." A small tool pallet will appear on your screen. Before adjusting the RGB (note: you cannot use CMYK color mode to alter a photo to black and white using the channel mixer) levels, check-mark the small box at the bottom of the pallet labeled "Monochrome." This will turn the photo black and white, after which you can adjust individually the reds, greens or blues to increase or decrease the white and black contrast through the original colors (though you will only see black and white). There is no set percentage to adjust your image to, as it completely depends on the quality and original contrast of your photo. Nothing will happen to your photo until you press "OK," so take some time to experiment decreasing and increasing each percentage until the photo looks how you wish it to look.

    3

Adjusting colors. Channel mixing for color adjustment works the same way as channel mixing for colors (without going to black-and-white mode). The only difference is that you will not select the "Monochrome" feature at the bottom of the pallet. The channel mixing in color mode is less common than in monochromatic, as very slight increases in percentage are needed. Channel mixing in color mode tends to alter the realistic color balance of a photo. However, if the effect you are attempting requires the complete alteration into unnatural colors, then adjust to any degree you prefer. This can be done in either RGB or CMYK mode.

    4

Making corrections. Along with properly controlled desaturation (turning a photo black and white) and color alteration, channel mixing can accomplish specific corrections on a photo. If you are dealing with a portrait in which the model has less than perfect skin, altering the red channel will lessen if not completely diminish the appearance of skin imperfections. The blue channel will usually sharpen facial features and highlight characteristics.

How to Use Slide Film

How to Use Slide Film

There are many photographers who inisist that slide film makes better pictures than 35mm negative film. There are also many magazines or newspapers that still prefer to have slides sent to them rather than digital photos. You may also have to take slides for a presentation, for photo jourmalism or for a class in art photography. Whatever your reason, it is good to be familiar with slide film.

Instructions

    1

Find camera shop or online supplier for professional photographers, like Ace Camera in England or Ritz Camera in America.

    2

Buy the best film you can afford at the highest ISO you can get if you want to capture moving objects, shoot at night or even on a cloudy day. You can get more grainy-looking images with lower-ISO film. A good film is Agfa Agfachrome RXS II 100 Professional. Fuji makes excellent slide film, too.

    3

Load film into your SLR camera in the exact same way you would load 35mm negative film, although it's best to load it in a darker area than you would for print film, as slide film is more sensitive to light.

    4

Adjust your light meter to the ISO of your film. How to do this differs from camera to camera, so you should consult your operation manual if you are unsure of how to do this. If your camera doesn't allow you to adjust the light meter, then skip Steps 4 and 5.

    5

Use the middle gray color patch on an 18% gray card or point your camera at a patch of gray and adjust your light meter to the gray. If you can, do it by half f-stop or full f-stop. Light display differ from camera to camera. New, out-of-the-box SLR camera light meters are already set to gray.

    6

Use the film up as soon as possible after purchase. Slide film degrades a lot faster than negative film.

    7

Send film to a developer or take it to a professional camera shop for development. Have the developer get the slides mounted. If you do not need to make prints, you can stop here. If you need to make prints, continue on to Steps 7 and 8.

    8

Use a projector or light box or put the slides up to the light to see which ones are the best.

    9

Take the slides you've chosen back to the developer and get prints made of them.
