One contest with extremely specific rules and a clear-cut judging process with which contestants should familiarize themselves is the photography contest.
Entry Fees and Awards
The entry fee for each photograph is $5, and contestants can enter up to four photographs, with a limit of one photo per class (category). Awards range from $500 for Best in Show to $50 for Honorable Mention awards. The contest awards prizes for both adults and youth in 30 categories.

In addition, specific requirements are in place for contest judges. One judge must teach photography, while the second judge must be a photojournalist working with news photography and the third judge must be an independent photographer working every day with photography while making a living at it.

These criteria include the quality of your image, color saturation, composition, lighting, difference between a snapshot and photograph, rule of thirds, depth of field, aperture and shutter speed. The judging process does not take into consideration such factors as the matting or title of your piece.
