Ideas on Taking Senior Portraits

Ideas on Taking Senior Portraits

Senior portraits are commonly taken by high school seniors to commemorate their upcoming graduation and are typically taken by a professional photographer. Oftentimes, the school will allow students to use one of these portraits in the yearbook instead of the standard school picture taken for their student identification card. When preparing to have your senior portraits taken, you will want to think about outfits and pose ideas so that you will end up with the best portraits possible.

Bring Several Outfits

Choose several different outfits to take your portraits in. For example, a casual outfit, a more formal, professional-looking outfit and a school spirit outfit such as a t-shirt with your school's name on it or a uniform of a sport you play. Have the photographer take shots of you in each outfit. When ordering your senior portraits, choose at least one pose in each outfit to have printed. This will ensure variety in your portraits to send to family and will give you more choices when choosing the look you want for the yearbook.

Expansive Outdoor Locations

If the weather enables you to take your senior portraits outside, choose an expansive outdoor location such as a large park or an urban city area. This will provide the photographer with plenty of different backgrounds to work with as well as various places for seated poses such as benches and staircases. Walk around with your photographer and pay attention to areas you find visually interesting and would be interested in photographing. This will ensure that your senior portraits do not all look the same and that each is distinctly different. Using an expansive outdoor location is recommended only if you want a scenic background in your photos.

Simple Facial Expressions

Before meeting with your photographer, practice different facial expressions in the mirror and pay attention to how each looks. Find a few expressions that are flattering and easy to repeat. While having your portraits taken, use these expressions. This way you will have fewer unflattering photographs and will have more visually pleasing shots to choose from when ordering prints.

Utilize Props

To incorporate your personality into your senior portraits, add in some props that are related to your hobbies or passions. For example, if you play the saxophone in the marching band, take a few shots with your saxophone. If you love bicycle riding, pose with your bicycle in the background. This will ensure that your senior portraits show off who you really are and will make your pictures visually interesting.

Solid Studio Backgrounds

If you want a more simple background for your portraits and want your photographs to be styled like a traditional head shot, have your photographer use a solid-colored backdrop and take your portraits indoors in a studio. Choose a background that will not clash or blend in with what you are wearing. Black, white and gray are three common backdrop colors that can be used with nearly any color of outfit.
