How to Save Water Damaged Negatives

Water from a leaking pipe or a flood doesn't have to spell disaster for your photographic negatives. Because it's processed in water, film can handle a certain amount of water. The key is to deal with the cleanup while the negatives are still wet and be patient -- this could be a time-consuming process. You can wet, rinse and repeat the process until the negatives appear to be clean.

Instructions

Submerge the damaged negatives in a container of clean and cold water.

Carefully separate any negatives that are stuck together. Don't pull hard or force them apart or you could damage the film.

Use a soft cloth to remove any dirt or debris from the negatives.

Repeat washing and rinsing as often as needed.

Do a final rinse in a photograph rinse solution, such as Photo-Flo. This will speed up the drying time and help prevent spots or water marks on the negatives.

Hang the negatives to dry or place them emulsion-side up (the side that isn't shiny) on a flat surface.
