Whether you are a model attending a photo shoot, or an individual or family having a portrait taken, it's best to know ahead of time what you should expect, what you should bring and what will photograph well.
Model Photo Shoot
Be sure to pack the following items in your shoot bag: for casual looks that your photographer might be looking for add blue jeans, knit sport and button tops, shorts and cutoffs jeans. Add a business suit and swim wear. Throw in pantyhose in a neutral shade as well as a variety of socks. Make sure you have several types of bras available, including push-up, strapless and racer back in both black and neutral flesh tone color. Bring a variety of props, like hats and neckties, and be sure to include a robe to wear between shots and a scarf or drape to keep makeup off of the client or photographer's clothes. You may also want to pack an iron or steamer to remove wrinkles from packing.
Individual Photo Shoot
When preparing for an individual photo shoot for yourself, ensure that your clothing allows the face to dominate the portrait. Avoid bold stripes, plaids, checks, and prints that are too busy; bright colors that will overpower your face; or very light colored clothing that calls attention to itself and away from you. If you are a woman being photographed in full-length clothing, wear long skirts, pants or stockings in dark colors, to keep the eye from being directed toward the legs and away from the face.
Family Photo Shoots
When planning a family group photo shoot, clothing coordination is crucial. Choose clothing all in the same tonal range so no one member stands out in the picture because their clothing is lighter or brighter than everyone else. If you are all wearing high contrast clothing, like cream and black, have the children in the portrait offer a contrast with a black and cream print top so that the photo is not as severe.
Keep in mind that simple clothing always photographs best. Turtlenecks and V-necks are flattering as long as they are not exaggerated, and in any adult, it's best to avoid bare arms as they call attention to themselves and away from your family's faces. If shoes are showing in the family portrait, ensure that all members have on shoes in keeping with the situational elements of the portrait.
