How to Give Your Photographs That Old Look

How to Give Your Photographs That Old Look

Old photographs are often torn, yellowed and dirty. Turning a modern digital photo into one that looks like it has been around for a few years is relatively simple, thanks to modern photo editing software. There are a number of ways to go about aging your photo, depending on how old you want to make it look and how much of the image quality you would like to preserve. Aging a photo is entirely up to your artistic tastes; you can make a photo look anywhere from a few years to a few decades old.

Instructions

    1

Remove the color from your image by completely reducing its saturation. Color photography did not become common until the 1960s. You can reduce saturation a little to fade the colors if you would like to keep them in the image.

    2

Add selective blur to your photograph to age it even further. You can use simple blur filters to reduce the crispness of any photograph.

    3

Add a layer of brown or yellow coloring to your image and adjust its transparency so the photo shows through. This makes the image look as if it has faded over time.

    4

Import an image of a Polaroid photograph and cut out its contents. Paste your image into the leftover square to make it look as if it was scanned directly from an old physical photo.

    5

Download and import a grungy texture, or make one of your own. These textures are scratched and dirty, and you can lay them on top of a photo and decrease their transparency to make your photo look like it is printed on old, damaged paper.

    6

Scan an old, wrinkled piece of paper and import the image as another layer. Adjust this layer's transparency and you will get an image that looks like it has been folded up or crumpled.

    7

Increase the contrast of your image until you start to see the photo grain. Older photos suffered from much higher color contrast as the technology for subtle tones had not yet been developed.
