How to Find Vanishing Points in Photographs

How to Find Vanishing Points in Photographs

Like other forms of two-dimensional art, photographs have a vanishing point, a point at which all parallel lines converge in an image. Accurately locating this point can be difficult, but it can be found if you know the right clues. Locating the vanishing point in photographs allows you to determine the correct angle to use when generating objects or text. Adding elements in the correct perspective helps create the illusion that they belong in the image.

Instructions

    1

Open your digital photo in your preferred photo editing software on your computer.

    2

Locate any parallel lines that point from the corners of the image toward the center. Select the longest, straightest line running from the right side and left side.

    3

Select the "Line" tool and trace and extend both lines from the edge of the image to the other side, creating a "X" shape. The axis of the "X" represents a vanishing point for the image.

    4

Find two more suitable center-pointing parallel lines in the image, trace them and locate their axis. Repeat this process until you have found the vanishing point with which most parallel lines in the image align.
