What Is an HDR Camera?

What Is an HDR Camera?

High dynamic range (HDR) photos merge several exposures of the same scene to create one image with a greater dynamic range of color and contrast. Any manual camera can be used with computer software to create HDR images, but some camera models have features that simplify the HDR process.

HDR Camera Features

The auto exposure bracketing feature quickly captures several photos of the same scene with different exposures. Many HDR cameras have a burst mode which takes multiple pictures with one push of the shutter button and reduces camera shake between shots.

HDR Camera Software

Some HDR cameras have software that merges photos to create HDR images in-camera. This eliminates the need for extensive computer editing and reduces the time required to create an HDR photo.

Basic Camera Requirments

To create an HDR image, the camera must allow manual adjustment of ISO, white balance, aperture and focus. The camera should also have a timer and continuous shooting mode. Using a tripod is essential to taking photos for an HDR image.
