How to Take Cute Kid Pictures

How to Take Cute Kid Pictures

Getting a kid to pose for the camera can be a bit of a challenge, as they are notorious for doing their own thing when you ask them to say "cheese." The trick to getting adorable photos of your kids and your family's kids is having the elements that notch up the cuteness factor at your disposal. You will also need a basic understanding of how light, colors and props can bring out the best in your kids' cutie-pie pictures.

Instructions

    1

Choose a setting that has ample natural light. It is fine to use a flash for indoor photos or overcast days, but natural light is best for all skin tones. If you are shooting photos indoors, try to shoot near a window or light-colored wall that catches the ambient light and reflects it onto the kids you are photographing. Another secret to getting the most out of natural light is using a large white foam board to "bounce" light from the sun onto the subjects you are photographing. You can cover the board with foil to get more reflection or paint over the board with a shade of metallic gold to bring out the warmth of olive and chocolaty skin tones.

    2

Give the child a personal prop that reflects her interests and is appropriate for her age. Be creative in your prop choices. Consider a stuffed toy, favorite doll, musical instrument, art supplies or sports equipment. Quirkier choices include a hair brush, a tooth brush, candy and elements of nature.

    3

Clean up the foreground and background, so only the elements you want in the photos are in the area that you will be shooting. Dress your setting even if you are are only shooting candid photos to send to family and friends. Consider adding some toys or a blossoming plant or just having clear surfaces in your background and foreground.

    4

Adorn the kid in a colorful ensemble, but stay away from solid black, pure white or primary red as these tend to suck the energy out of the other colors in a photo. Choose softer tones, pastels and patterned attire. Also, try shirts with funny or cute slogans on them or an eccentric hat to add a bit of humor to your photos.

    5

Play some upbeat tunes to get the kids in a playful mood that will allow their personality shine through. Music that they can bop around to will help you capture their exuberance on camera.
