A solid tripod is the best and most flexible support for a camera. There are hundreds of tripod models available but even the most basic provide the support necessary for a self portrait.
Tether the Camera
Many digital cameras have an output port that can be hooked to a computer or even a television to serve as a monitor. Place the monitor where it can be viewed while in front of the camera. You can check your self portraits without having to walk around the camera and check the display on the back of the camera.
Remote Trigger
Most digital single lens reflex cameras are capable of being triggered by either a wired or wireless remote. Check the accessories for your camera to determine the best option for remote triggering. If the camera doesn't support a remote, the timed shutter is the only option. This fires the camera at a predetermined time after the shutter is pushed, allowing the photographer to get into the frame. Overall, the remote trigger generally provides better results.

The same principles of portrait lighting apply to self portrait lighting. A single light placed to the side results in a shadow over part of the face and a more moody picture. Soft lighting and focus can create a romantic feel to the photograph. Experiment with different lighting options to find the look you are looking for.
