How to Take Action Photos With an SLR Camera

How to Take Action Photos With an SLR Camera

Whether it be a football game, a running animal or any other situation involving motion, action shots are a part of photography. Good, clear action photos can be challenging to achieve. You must understand something about shutter speed and aperture openings. Shutter speed is how long the shutter is open, measured in fractions of seconds. The larger the denominator the faster the speed. A larger the aperture setting allows more light in. Follow these methods for clear action photos.

Instructions

Using Shutter Speed for an Action Photo

    1

Set the shutter speed to 1/500 or faster.

    2

Set a large aperture opening to allow more light.

    3

Take the photo. You may need to take some practice shots to experiment with the settings.

Panning for an Action Photo

    4

Mount the camera on the tripod.

    5

Set the shutter speed to a low setting.

    6

Track the subject with the camera by pivoting on the tripod as you press the shutter release button. For this method to work correctly, you must follow at the same speed the subject is moving.
