Dreamy & Magic Lighting Effects

Photography literally translates to "light" (photo) and "writing" (graph), and just as with writing, it is nice when there is some effect that makes it more interesting. The best way to achieve this is to add color or unusual light to the shot, with the help of light positioning, light manipulation and changes in camera settings. Photographers can set their work apart by using these techniques to add dreamy and magic elements to their shots.

Attach gels to the head of your flashes to create a sense of fantasy in your photographs. Gels come in a large array of colors, the most popular of which are orange and blue, to mimic the sun and to cool off light, respectively. Orange gels also add a pleasing hue to skin tones, making human portraits look like illustrations rather than snapshots. Theater gels can make otherwise mundane-looking areas appear most interesting. Remember that when you turn the power to the max on your flash, the gel's color will wash out somewhat. When the flash power is turned down, the color will appear more saturated.

Double-rim lighting makes human subjects appear to be completely separated from their backgrounds. Unlike a traditional lighting set-up, with one rim light coming from behind the subject at 45-degree angle, double-rim lighting calls for two rim lights to evenly define the cheek bones of the subject. As a result, the subject looks somewhat fantastical, like a futuristic version of themselves.

Activate rear curtain mode on your camera's flash to capture moving shots. Rear curtain mode enables your flash to fire as the shutter of the camera closes, rather than when it opens. The result is a double exposure: one blurry exposure of ambient light, and a frozen flash exposure on top of it. The two different exposures juxtaposed together portray movement within the frame.

Take away the bland gray hue of an overcast day by changing the camera's white balance setting to "tungsten." The tungsten setting is symbolized most often on cameras with a light bulb, which it is made to compensate for. The setting is meant to cool off warm light, however when it is used to cool off neutral cloud lighting, the result is a deep blue hue. Under expose your shots to deepen the blue tone. Overexpose your shots to lighten the effect. Add orange gels to your flash head and use the tungsten setting to pose normally colored subjects in front of a saturated blue background.

Homemade darkrooms are an affordable alternative to purchasing a costly professional kit. Most items can be easily purchased and assembled in just about any area you would like to dedicate to photo developing. With a bit of ingenuity you can build your own special place to work on your precious photographs.

Whether you plan on utilizing a big closet space or transforming a private area in the basement, keep in mind that a darkroom requires access to running water, an electrical outlet and the ability to block out natural light. Having your own dark room is convenient -- it means no more trips to the photo lab when your darkroom is available to you at any time of day.

Developing your own pictures enriches your artistic journey.

While office ink jet and laser printers can deliver instant gratification, the photo quality is often lacking. Those faded, old vintage Polaroid pictures can certainly testify that speedy development techniques are not favorable for archival purposes. That extra time you spend in your private darkroom perfecting your artistic vision ensures that the photos will be enjoyed for decades. Just as homemade chili tastes worlds better than the canned variety, an original photo processed by the artist himself is automatically richer in content and quality.

It's absolutely necessary to be prepared with all of the necessary equipment and processing supplies before you begin. To ensure you can complete your developing process uninterrupted, you will need to lay out your materials in a manner that you can readily access, preferably in the order in which they are used. For example, there are four processing trays; the first is for the developer, the second the stop bath, the third the fixer and finally, the fourth is the wash. Developer, stop bath and fixer are standard chemicals that should be clearly labeled and properly stored. The same should be done for photographic paper, which is light sensitive. An enlarger with timer, safe light, easel for exposing photos, tongs, thermometer and a squeegee are part of the laundry list necessary for your darkroom. After your initial investment, you can be assured that it's inexpensive to stay stocked with processing solutions and paper.

Tinkering with a variety of chemical levels and processing techniques makes every print a one-of-a-kind work of art. There is a sense of pride knowing that every image you've created was carried out from beginning to end by your own two hands. As you submerge yourself in the artistic process and witness your images slowly transforming in the dim lighting of your own private darkroom, it becomes apparent that the reward goes well beyond the finished photograph.

Well-written research papers often explore a topic that provide enough information to formulate and convey an idea. Photography is a broad subject that can provide authors with ample information for a research paper. Depending on the preferences of the author, papers can be written about the technological aspects of photography to the lives of famous photographers and many other topics.

Photography has a rich history. Writing a history-based research paper is one of the most common types of papers that can be written on a specific topic. These types of papers often explore origins, major breakthroughs concerning that topic, and how the past applies to the present. A well-written paper will explore and expand upon the common conventions of a research paper.

Many of the famous photographs throughout history were taken by individuals with a unique vision and way of capturing their subjects on film. These photos are often timeless and reflect the photographers unique personality. Photographers such as Ansel Adams and Robert Mapplethorpe built their careers around fine art photography and in their later years used their fame to become activists for specific world causes. Writing a research paper that explores the background of some of the worlds most well-known photographers can provide insight into their art.

Through years of trial and error, and understanding of the physics of light, professional and amateur photographers established various techniques for capturing a photo. Techniques such as the use of long exposure times, the manipulation of focal planes, and the use of computers to retouch an image have all become industry standards. These techniques often appear in different media such as print advertisements, portraits, and wildlife photography. Photographers will often apply these techniques to a photo to give them a unique tone. In many cases each technique was pioneered by either a team or single individual. A research paper that explores the origin and dynamics of each technique can be written in a way that complies with the paper's guidelines.

Exploring the different types of photos that make up the world of photography can provide an ample amount of information for a research paper. Many photos fall into specific categories that are defined by the characteristics of the photo. Since the early development of photographic technology landscape, portrait, and night photography have become some of the most common types of photos seen throughout the world. Research papers can be written that explore each type of photo and the milestones associated with each. For example, president Obama's presidential photo was the first official presidential portrait to be taken with a digital camera. A student can write a paper on the history of presidential portraits.

How to Not Get a Shadow When Shooting a Portrait

There are many different elements that constitute a good photograph. Not only do you have to adjust your camera to get the proper focus and shutter speed, but you must also shoot in the appropriate lighting. Oftentimes, in dark settings, photographers will use their flash to help light the area momentarily. Unfortunately, this can sometimes result in very obvious shadows being captured in the photograph, making it look unpleasant. When shooting your next portrait, keep several things in mind to help maintain shadow-free shots.

Instructions

Set your camera to auto mode. Doing this will allow your camera to automatically detect the amount of light, imploring it to use the flash only when necessary. If, however, your camera uses flash, and you're getting shadows, you should try some other methods as well.

Move your subject farther from the background. This is particularly necessary when you're using flash, as the camera's light will create a shadow on any nearby objects located behind the subject. Moving the subject away from the background will allow the shadows to fall to the ground and not be picked up in the photograph.

Shoot in the shade. This is necessary when shooting outdoors, as shooting directly beneath the sun will often cause harsh shadows. Shooting directly underneath the sun may also cause your subjects to squint their eyes and wrinkle their face in ways that look less aesthetically pleasing than standard portrait photos.

Use a reflector. This is an object that's covered in foil or a similar reflective surface and bounces the light back to the subject, thus eliminating shadows. Set the reflect opposite of your light source to bounce light back in the direction of the light source, thus canceling out the shadow.
