How to Make a Drop Cloth for Groups to Stand on During a Photo Shoot

How to Make a Drop Cloth for Groups to Stand on During a Photo Shoot

A drop cloth for photography is used to cover the ground beneath the subjects. It is almost always connected to the backdrop, or at least related to the backdrop. When the drop cloth is connected to the backdrop, the floor and background are seamless. This makes editing the photo much easier and gives it a cleaner look; it is therefore recommended. The drop cloth can be made from many materials, including cloth, fabric or even paper.

Instructions

    1

Set up the background stand. This will hold the background and drop cloth material up and in place. Background stands can be purchased or made at home.

    2

Make a cloth or fabric drop cloth. Visit a fabric store and purchase a roll of solid color fabric. It should have a high thread count for durability. The fabric roll should be as wide as the stand and 35 to 40 feet long, depending on how high the stand is and how far the drop cloth should extend. The store will cut the fabric for you. Alternatively, inexpensive background paper is available from photography supply stores in various measurements.

    3

Attach the end of the drop cloth to the top of the stand. Make sure it is taut along the stand's beam; this will eliminate creases. Where the material reaches the floor, make sure it creates a soft angle rather than a sharp angle. Pull the drop cloth forward, so there is a gradual bend from background to drop cloth. When looking at the background/drop cloth from the side, it should look like a "C" shape, rather than an "L" shape. This will eliminate creases and make the background appear uniform.
