How to Enhance Color in Black & White

How to Enhance Color in Black & White

If you're looking to give an artistic feel to your everyday photos, consider printing them in black and white with an enhanced pop of color. Although turning your photos to black and white is easy (see Tips), enhancing the color isn't always so simple. You can enhance the color of your photos easily with Photoshop. If you don't have access to or want to purchase Photoshop, you can use special paper paint to create the same effect.

Instructions

Photoshop

    1

Open Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, and open the picture you want to alter.

    2

Click on the "magic lasso" in the toolbox.

    3

Right-click to open the magic lasso options. Select "Polygonal Lasso Tool."

    4

Click and drag your mouse around the perimeter of the object you want to enhance with color. Trace the entire object, then double-click inside the traced object to select that area.

    5

Click "Select" at the top of the toolbar, then click "Inverse."

    6

Click "Enhance" in the toolbar, and click "Convert to Black and White." Click "OK." The entire picture will convert to black and white except for the traced area(s) you selected.

Paper Paint

    7

Purchase translucent paper or scrapbooking gel paint from any scrapbooking or arts and crafts store. These gel paints can be purchased in a variety of colors.

    8

Print out your black and white picture on matte photo paper for best results.

    9

Dip a thin paint brush into the gel paint.

    10

Brush the translucent gel paint over the area of the black and white photo that you'd like to enhance with color. The gel paint will tint that area without covering up any details.
