How to Setup a Photo Shoot

How to Setup a Photo Shoot

"A photo tells a story," says photographer Sharon J. Washington. While setting up a photo shoot, concentrate more on your location and subject than on the camera gear and lighting equipment. Find a location that has a personality of its own. If you are shooting in a studio, you must create a personality using props, backdrops or seating. When the subject is brought in, it is your job to ensure he appears comfortable and natural. His body language and facial expressions are key in setting up a photo of good quality.

Instructions

Choose a location that is already beautiful, such as an outdoor setting or an elegant home. Ensure you have access to a power supply. Bring props such as flowers, extra clothing or a chair to change the visual dynamics during the photo shoot.

    2

Run an extension cord from your power supply to the photo shoot location. Plug in your electric power strip.

Set up your key light, or your bright light which creates interest. Place the key light to the left or to the right of the subject. Be sure to keep it out of shooting range.

Set up your fill light on the opposite side from your key light. Ensure the fill light prevents unwanted or overbearing shadows from forming in the spaces your key light will cast. Ensure the fill light is out of shooting range.

Set up your back light, which will separate your subject from the background. Place the back light at a good distance from the subject, ensuring the light looks natural from the vantage of the camera. Be sure the back light is blocked by the subject of the shoot.

Tripods allow a slower shutter speed which captures a light motion blur.

Set up your tripod at a good distance from the subject. Experiment with heights and angles for your shoot. Place your camera on the tripod, and adjust the settings to suit the lighting and image depth.

Direct a human subject during the shoot by having her pretend to do activities like jumping, or by asking her to imagine topics such as true love, a mysterious alley or a beautiful ocean. Use descriptive terms to direct a human subject, and ensure that she is actively involved in the shoot.
