How to Make the Photo Mats

How to Make the Photo Mats

Though many art stores sell basic, prefabricated frames in a variety of common printed photo sizes, you may have a particularly important image that you'd like to display in a way that showcases its excellence. One way to do this is to frame your photo with a mat made of heavy card stock. Framing a photograph with a mat offsets the image from the edge of the frame and gives it a polished, professional look. With a hand-held mat cutter, ruler, mat board and cut-resistant surface, you can make your own custom photo mats at home.

Instructions

    1

Remove the backing and the glass from an empty picture frame. Place the glass on a standard 32-by-40-inch mat board and trace around the edges with a pencil.

    2

Place the mat board on a cut-resistant surface. Use a craft knife pressed against a metal ruler to cut out the general area of the board that contains the section you measured. Do not cut along the pencil lines yet. Cut around them and leave an outside margin of roughly 2 inches. Remove the excess board and put it aside.

    3

Measure the distances between opposite pencil lines at two different points on the rectangle to make sure you've made a perfect rectangle. If you made a mistake, draw the pencil lines again using your ruler and measurements as a guide.

    4

Place your ruler on one of the pencil lines and hold it down firmly with the heel of your hand. Place the blade of a hand-held mat cutter against the end of the ruler and trace the pencil line with the blade to cut through the board. Repeat this on the remaining three sides of the rectangle, then put the trimmings aside.

    5

Put a piece of clear tape in each corner of your photograph. Affix the photograph to the center of your rectangular piece of mat board and check the placement with a ruler. Make any necessary adjustments, then trace the outside of the photograph with the ruler and a pencil.

    6

Remove the photograph to reveal a rectangle drawn in pencil. Draw a smaller rectangle inside of this one, using your pencil and the ruler as a guide. Leave an inside margin of 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. This makes the completed mat overlap the edges of the photograph when you frame it.

    7

Line up the ruler against one of the sides of the innermost rectangle. Align the blade of a hand-held mat cutter with the ruler, and cut through the mat slowly. Repeat this process for the remaining three sides of the rectangle, then remove the small rectangular piece that you've cut out to reveal a window in the larger board.

    8

Tape the photograph to the edges of the open window and place it face down on the glass you removed from the frame. Place the backing board face down on top of the mat, and slide everything back into the frame.

  1. I get $20 for a 20 minute survey!

Guess what? This is exactly what major companies are paying me for. They need to know what their customer needs and wants. So large companies pay $1,000,000's of dollars each month to the average person. In return, the average person, myself included, answers some questions and gives them their opinion.
