There is more to celebrate in Autumn than Oktoberfest and Halloween. Autumn is a great time to take photographs. No matter where you live in the United States (with the exception of Hawaii), the quality and angle of light changes dramatically as the earth moves through its orbit around the sun. The areas of our country that contain deciduous trees go through dramatic changes in leaf color depending on climatic conditions and the amount of rain. The air is crisp and clear and there is color everywhere. The problem is, to quote a famous song: we get "blinded by the light." The rules of photography still apply, but some of us just get caught up in the color and forget the basic rules of composition. So before you get trigger happy, take a minute to read this article to help you maintain your focus.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is composition. Does this image comply with the Rule of Thirds? If you are not sure what the Rule of Thirds is, check out my article on this composition technique (see Resources below). The answer is NO. Yes, the color is beautiful and exposure perfect, but does it cause you to sigh? I think not. Just because the color is great, it doesn't mean you have a good image.
2Watch out for visual obstructions. The fall color on the hills is beautiful, and even the cars add to the small town street scene. The overhead wires add nothing, however, and in fact destroy the eye flow completely. This shot is a throw away in my opinion--and in fact, after walking the street I determined the only way to take this shot was from a rooftop or crane.
3Autumn is a great time to take wildlife photos. The white tale bucks are especially wonderful late in the season after they have gone into rut and rubbed the "velvet" off of their rack. Deer change their coloration throughout the year--and in autumn they are brown to blend in with the fallen leaves--and in the winter they are gray to blend in with the snow.
4The angle of the sun changes, and therefore the types of sunsets are different in the fall than in the spring or summer. In the fall the sun is further away from North America so the angle at which the sun hits the land is different then in the spring or summer. The further north you are, the less the sun rises in the sky, so you can say that the color of the light is different in different seasons. Of course this depends where you are and what day of the year it is. As the United States slides into autumn, Australia is entering into spring. The point of this is, try taking sunset pictures in the autumn since you will get a different result from the same location.
5Integrate water into your images. Lakes and rivers will reflect the colors of the fall foliage adding more color to your photograph
6Don't forget to tell a story. You have seen me write this in a lot of articles because I think it is an essential part of photography. I also know that excess color makes us a little crazy and this is one of the first things people forget. Having the dog in the image takes what would be a static scenic shot and turns it into a walk in the woods.
