Although 35mm film cameras are becoming a rare breed in an increasingly digital world, photographers still love them. Whether it be the distinct color palettes delivered by different brands of film, the experience of developing the film in the darkroom or the pleasant whirr of film moving in the camera, there are many reasons to keep using film. Although shooting a sunset without being able to use a screen to check your shots may seem risky, following a few basic tips will help your chances of getting that perfect shot of an evening's glow.

Plan your shot beforehand. Look for locations that offer a good view of the horizon and the sun's path with some interesting things in the foreground that you can integrate into the photo or use for silhouettes. The more planning you can do before the sunset begins, the more time you will have to take shots of it as it happens.
2Load your camera with high-speed film. ISO 400 or 800 film is better for lower light levels and will yield better sunset pictures than the ISO 50, 100 or 200 films generally used for daytime photography.
3Bring the right equipment. A lens that can zoom to at least 200mm is necessary if you want to take any close-up pictures of the sun, since it occupies only half a degree of arc in the sky. To do a closeup shot like that, you will need a tripod to keep your camera stable.
4Turn off your flash. The light from the flash is bright and cold and will wash out the warm tones of sunset light. If you are using a point-and-shoot that doesn't allow you to turn it off, look for a night mode. When in doubt, put tape over your flash bulb.
5Set your light levels. If you have an automatic camera, it will usually adjust to a reading taken by its light meter when the shutter button is pressed halfway down. Point it at the sky, but away from the sun, to get the ideal reading. If you have an SLR camera that allows you to manually set the aperture and exposure time, experiment.
6Focus your camera manually if you can. Autofocus cameras can be thrown off by the light levels at sunset. If you have an SLR, you can focus by twisting the lens to get the exact sharpness you want.
7Shoot lots of pictures. Play around with your aperture and exposure settings if you have an SLR, or just snap away as the light changes over time. The more photos you take, the better chance you have of seeing a great one when you develop your film.
