How Is a Negative Formed With a Pinhole Camera?

How Is a Negative Formed With a Pinhole Camera?

Pinhole photography is the most basic form of the art and does not use lenses, but rather a shutter, hole and film plane located in a light-tight container.

Principles

Light-sensitive material is placed inside a light-tight container. When the shutter is opened, light enters through the pinhole, projecting light waves onto the material.

Characteristics

Due to the small diameter of the pinhole and the lack of a focusing lens, the depth of field is infinite, causing images to lack sharpness.

Equipment

Pinhole cameras are made from a sealed, light-tight container. There is always a pinhole that acts as an iris and some form of shutter to control exposure length.

Exposure

Exposure lengths are longer than a standard camera and can last anywhere from several seconds to several hours or even days.

Processing

Filming material from pinhole cameras is processed in a darkroom. If the light-sensitive material is film, it is removed in complete darkness and processed accordingly to create a negative. If the material is photographic paper, it can be removed in a darkroom with a special darkroom light and processed like a regular photo. The image on the photographic paper will be a negative image.
