High-key lighting usually has a very light, bright, white or pale hue. High-key lighting studios typically use white backgrounds for the photos. Any human subjects of these photos often dress in either white or pale clothing. However, high-key lighting studio photographers most commonly use the technique for photographing small objects on white backgrounds.
Box Studios
To create a small high-key lighting studio of your own, simply incorporate a lot of light and white or pale photography backgrounds. For small items, create a small lighting studio using a box or light tent, which will allow you to provide a lot of direct light while also diffusing it to prevent harsh, unprofessional looking shadows on your subject.
Though you can purchase small light tents and studios, try creating one yourself by cutting holes into the sides and top of a cardboard box to make window-like openings. Cover these openings with white cloth, wax paper, tissue paper or another light-colored diffusion material. Place your studio lights and lamps outside the small studio box and point them toward the diffusion-covered windows. This will allow the light to shine inside the box and light up the object you're photographing, while diffusing the light enough to prevent harsh shadows.
To create the high-key lighting look, place white paper or fabric along the inside bottom and back of your box, then sit your object in the center. Shine very strong lamps or studio lights into each side and the top of the box to create a very bright interior. Increase the high-key effect by overexposing your photos by plus-one or plus-two stops on the camera.
Larger Studios
To build a larger studio, start with a very light or pure white room, then add as much extra light as you can. If possible, incorporate sunlight from wide-open windows or patio doors. Use studio lights by themselves or in combination with the natural lighting. The bright white of the room will help reflect and enhance the overall amount of available light.
To create high key photos of people, dress them in pale or white clothing. For the best high-key still lifes, photograph pale objects. Regardless of the subject, increase your camera's exposure setting to create more of a high-key effect in the finished photo just as you would with a box studio.
