How to Size Thumbnails Proportionally

How to Size Thumbnails Proportionally

Web designers often use thumbnail images in their projects. A thumbnail image is simply a smaller version of the original photo. Thumbnail photos are usually used as a preview to the original image. They are smaller and load faster on a Web page. You must resize the image proportionally to render thumbnails properly. This proportional resizing ensures that the photo is not stretched or compressed. This can be done easily with the use of free third- party software.

Instructions

    1

Download and install IrfanView graphic viewer. IrfanView is a free, open platform software. Follow the link in the Resources section.

    2

Open the IrfanView program. Click on the "File" menu and select the "Open" option from the drop-down menu. Locate the thumbnail that you wish to resize, and click the "Open" button

    3

Click on the menu labeled "Image" at the top of the IrfanView window, and select "Resize/Resample" from the drop-down menu. This option can also be accessed by pressing the "Ctrl" and "R" keys simultaneously while IrfanView is open.

    4

Select the option "Preserve aspect ratio" at the bottom of the pop-up window. A check mark will be visible in the box after you turn this option on.

    5

Resize the picture by changing the Width, Height or DPI box values. Notice when you change one value that the other values change as well. This means your image will be proportionally resized.

    6

Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window after entering your new thumbnail dimensions.

    7

Select the "File" menu from the top of the IrfanView window and select "Save" or "Save As." The "Save" option will overwrite the original, while the "Save As" option will save the new thumbnail size as a copy. Choose the option that best suits your needs.

    8

Choose a folder destination to save your thumbnail. Click the "Save" button to save all your changes.
