How to Develop 35mm Film at Home

If you have access to both hot and cold running water with adjustable temperature controls, you're on your way to developing 35mm film at home. A small bathroom can easily be turned into a home film processing lab with a few minor modifications to lighting and the shower area. While converted to a film developing area, the bathroom will no longer be usable for showering. If the home only has one bathroom, consider converting a laundry room or rough plumbed basement room into a film processing area.

Room Setup

Exchange bathroom household bulbs with photo-safe red or blue bulbs. Purchase the specialized lighting at a photo retailer; novelty painted bulbs will ruin film during the developing process.

Cover all windows with black-out shades or curtains. Have a door snake ready to place at the base of the door to block out light from the adjoining room.

Prepare a film drying area in the shower stall by securing an adjustable shower curtain rod along the longest width of the shower. Hang plastic clothing hangers on the rod. Use one hanger for every two rolls of film.

Attach film drying clips to the hangers. Place one clip near each of the lower corners of the triangular hanger, so they are as far apart as possible.

Convert a vanity area into a film developing work space. Lay an old towel over the vanity to absorb spills. Place a plastic tray (at least 10 inches long) on the vanity. If there is no vanity, cover the top of the toilet seat with a piece of plywood to create a low table-top surface.

Mix all chemistry according to the directions on the package and store in light-tight storage jugs. Label each container and save the photo chemical packaging for film developing time and temperature information.

Film Developing, Part I

Enter the bathroom, turn on the photo-safe lights, pull the door shut, close the window shades and place the door snake at the base of the door to block out light. Lock the door.

Use the bottle opener to open each film cassette. In the dim light, place the opener at the edge of the flat end of the film cassette. Pry off the flat circle in the same manner as a metal bottle cap.

Unwind the film from the cassette. Use scissors to cut the end of the film from the plastic dowel.

Place the leader end of the film into the center of a film reel, hooking it on the clips. Wind the entire roll onto the reel. Repeat this step with as many rolls as you will be processing in the first batch.

Submerge the loaded film reels into the developing tank and place the cap on top. Open the push cap on the top, allowing warm tap water to flow into the tank and moisten the reels. Let the reels soak in the water for one minute. Pour out the water.

Film Developing, Part II

Place the tank in the plastic tray. Add the developer to the tank. Gently agitate the film with a smooth turning motion for the recommended amount of time (see Tips section). Pour the developer down the sink drain. Rinse the film reels with warm water or stop bath.

Pour fixer into the developing tank. Gently agitate the film with a smooth turning motion for the recommended amount of time. Pour the fixer down the sink drain. Rinse the film reels with warm water or stop bath.

Wash the film in warm water. Allow a steady flow of water to rinse over and around the film reels in the tank with the lid completely off. Dump the water and refill with clear water. Add wetting agent. Allow the reels to soak briefly, then dump the water, unroll the film and hang on the film clips in the shower stall. Place an additional film clip on the end of the film strip for weight, so it hangs straight. Let the film to dry up to eight hours.

How to Set Up Photo Studio Lighting

The word photography means writing with light, therefore each photo represents a certain manipulation of light envisioned by the photographer. As such, there is no exact science to setting up studio lighting, as it depends on the desired photo effect. However, there are basic principles that apply to nearly all studio shots: the presence of a backdrop, background and key lights, and diffusion tools. Once you set up, alter them as your shot requires.

Set up the background using background stands and a backdrop. You can purchase or make your own stands from PVC piping or wood, or virtually any other material that can be manipulated to securely hold up a backdrop. The backdrop must be seamless; it must be long enough to cover the background and drape down and cover the foreground. This ensures that the horizon (where the background meets the floor) completely disappears, thus eliminating pesky shadows.

Place a subject place holder on the set. In order to properly set up your lights before you position the model/object, you will have to know where it will be located. Any object such as a chair or small table can take the place of an object to enable you to set up the lights.

Position the background lights (on stands) on either side of the object (placeholder). The background lights are crucial for negating shadows caused by the subject and key lights. Each background light should be level (exactly to the side) of the subject. Angle the lights inward and down toward the background so that the two beams cross when they hit. This will ensure that the the background will light evenly. Make sure that the background lights are not in the camera's view range.

Set up the key light(s). The key light is the main source of light used to illuminate the subject; it can either be a steady light (continual stream) or a strobe light (flash). The key light also must be on a stand positioned slightly higher than the model and pointed at a slight downward angle. Place the light either to the front-right or front-left of the subject.

Attach soft boxes or umbrellas to the key light. The purpose of a soft box or umbrella is to diffuse the light around the model, avoiding harsh lighting that could cause white-out or shadows (such as a nose shadow). Diffusing the light allows for a soft natural light to fill the space evenly.

Hold or position a diffusion screen on the opposite side of the key light. If needed, position a light screen set on a stand or have an assistant hold the light screen angled toward the subject on the left if the key light is on the right, for example. This will further diffuse the light.

It depends on the photographer, the vision for the photo and the natural light (if any) around the setup. The best way to break out of a creative photography slump is to come up with a bold theme for your next photography project. While it may be fun to photograph your pets and family in silly poses, there is more out there to get your creative juices flowing. Keep in mind when walking around or taking pictures of strangers that you should be safe at all times. Don't film in locations that are off-limits or in places you are completely unfamiliar with.

Lengths of Time

Various photography projects can be based on lengths of time. One project suggested by the online Digital Photography School is to take a picture of yourself each day for 365 straight days. This project will show how little or how much a person can change over the course of a year. The project can be adapted to one photo a week for 52 consecutive weeks. Another idea from the Digital Photography School is to go on one photo walk away from your house each week for an entire year. A photo walk is a trip through various locations with just your camera or with your entire photography group.

The Unknown

Base a theme on photographing the unknown. One idea is to photograph 100 strangers. This project will require a bit of personality, because you should always ask for permission, but you may make a few new friends in the process. Another idea is to photograph 100 places you have never been. You can also extensively photograph a subject you knew nothing about. For example, if you know nothing about baseball, you could photograph equipment, games and people playing the sport.

Telling a Story

Another project idea is to tell a story from beginning to end with just pictures. You can set up objects to tell the story (or have friends do it while you take pictures), or you can find a story in progress and photograph it as it unfolds. If something is going on in your own life, you can tell that story as the project.

Weather

You can do a project based on the weather if you have sufficient time and live in a part of the country that experiences all four seasons. Cody's Science Education Zone suggests taking a picture of every different kind of weather in your area, including fog, rain, sun, hail and snow. Don't put yourself in danger trying to get a picture of a hurricane or a tornado.

Superlatives

Make a list of your friends and acquaintances and decide who is the most talkative, the most likely to be successful, the cutest, etc. Take pictures of them that indicate these qualities and put them in a sort of makeshift yearbook, suggests Cody's Science Education Zone. Share the project with your friends and your classmates. Try to keep the superlatives positive so there are no hurt feelings.
