Problems With Black & White Photography

Problems With Black & White Photography

Images are used when words seem to fail us. Some moments just cannot be expressed through written or verbal remarks, but rather must be captured through the art of photography. An image provides stories and feelings through its use of colors, shades and subjects. Sometimes, colors can be the most important aspect of a picture, giving the image life. This can be a major disadvantage of black and white photography.

Color Adds Life

Pictures are more vibrant with color; color adds life. For some images, black and white may come across as boring or dull; however, once color is added, these images come alive. For instance, a scenic picture at a park-- where the sun is shining, women are holding umbrella's, matching their elegant sundresses-- would not have the same effect as it would in color if it were printed in black and white. Color shows life. Black and white almost represents the opposite.

Black and White May Negatively Change the Mood

Colors can affect a person's mood. For example, when walking into a bright room with cheerful colors -- yellow, orange, green -- you develop a sense of happiness; however, if you walk into a room with cold colors, such as gray or black, you may gain feelings of uneasiness or depression. The same goes for a photograph. Depending on the subject matter, we may perceive an image as positive, but it may be perceived less positive than if we were to see it in color.

Color is Aesthetically Pleasing to the Eye

Black and white pictures may not seem to stand out as much as colored ones, due to their lack of variety. Colorful features are more catchy to the eye compared to rough colors, such as shades of blacks. Viewers' attention would automatically be drawn toward the colorful image, due to the variety in its display. Rich hues are aesthetically pleasing to our eyes. Although there may be exceptions, black and white is usually not as visually appealing as soft, warm or bright colors.

The Image Can Appear Storyless

Pictures tell stories; colors add to the narrative. Without colors, we may be cheated out of the full effect of the story. When presenting a photograph in black and white, the photographer needs to be sure that he is not cutting the story short for the viewer. If colors have a strong effect on how the picture is identified, shooting the image in black and white may not be in the artist's favor. Colors can be symbolic and hold specific, powerful meanings. These meanings may not be present when they are captured in shades of black.
