Marshall's Photo Oils are specially formulated oil paints for painting on photographs. They are more transparent than regular oil paints, almost like watercolors. Photographers have been painting on photographs almost since the beginning of photography in the 19th century. It's not hard to do, but painting on photographs is different from painting on paper or canvas. There are special tools and techniques that you need to be familiar with.

Print your negative on matte photographic paper. Glossy paper does not work well for hand-painting. Print the photo at a lighter value than you normally would, as you are going to cover most of the areas with paint and thus darken them. Fix your print without any hardener in the fixer tray.
2Prime the dry print with Marshall's P.M. Solution: coat a piece of cotton with the solution, and wipe the print horizontally first all over, and then vertically. Check to make sure the entire print was covered with the P.M. Solution. Then take a tissue and gently wipe away the excess primer. Use this P.M. Solution in a well-ventilated area.
3Take a skewer and roll the pointed end in a tiny bit of the cotton, to make a sort of pointed cotton swab. Do the same with some of the toothpicks. You will need a separate skewer for each color, and some skewers for removing excess color. The toothpicks are for fine details.
Prepare your palette by squeezing out a small amount of each oil color onto a piece of wax paper. Place the wax paper on a piece of mat board.
4Start with the face, if there are people in your photograph. Apply the skin color to the face in a circular motion with one of the cotton-tipped skewers. Don't worry if you don't stay in the lines; you will remove excess color later.
5Take a clean piece of cotton and very gently wipe the face area to blend the color. Don't wipe so hard that the color comes off; rather, just lightly blend it, so the brush marks disappear. Follow the same process with the hair. Color the facial features such as lips and eyes with the toothpicks -- or you can use colored pencils.
6Dip a clean cotton-covered skewer in the Marshall's extender. Clean up around the edge of the face, and remove all the paint that went into the background around the face. Clean up around the hair also. Now you are ready to paint the background. Use a piece of cotton or a cotton-covered skewer to blend the color into the paper.
7Clean up the edges of the photograph with the extender. Allow the photograph to dry.
