How to Convert Photos to Coloring Book Pages

How to Convert Photos to Coloring Book Pages

Most children love to color. Instead of spending money on coloring books, take the family vacation pictures and print out a custom coloring book! The kids will relive the fun while adding colors to their memories. Converting a digital photograph into a coloring book page is fairly straightforward, and any image editing program that uses Layers and Levels features should be up to the challenge.

Instructions

    1

If your images are not already on your computer, transfer them from your camera as indicated by the camera's directions, from a CD-ROM, or from a flash drive. Save the images in an easily accessible folder.

    2

Open your computer's image editing program, Adobe Photoshop or GIMP, by clicking on the icon on your desktop.

    3

Load the selected image by clicking on the File pull-down menu, and then selecting Open. On some programs, the Open command may be titled Import.

    4

Copy the layer. In Photoshop, pull down the Layers menu and then click Duplicate Layer. In GIMP, click the Duplicate Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.

This action will create a perfect duplicate of the image on top of the original, like a sheet of tracing paper.

    5

Blur the copy. Gaussian Blur is the best tool for this because the options provide the most control over the amount of the blur. Depending on the program, Gaussian Blur is usually found in the Filters menu.

The amount of blur will control the thickness of the lines in the final product. The larger the numbers in the Gaussian Blur control, the heavier the lines in the coloring book will be.

    6

Convert the layer to a negative by using the Invert control. In Photoshop, Invert is in the Adjustments section of the Image menu. In GIMP, pull down Image, then select Color, and finally Invert.

When the two layers are merged, the inverted colors will cancel each other out, leaving only the edges.

    7

Find the Opacity setting on the Layers palette, and lower it to about fifty percent. The original drawing should appear faintly through the layer.

    8

Merge the two layers. The equivalent in Photoshop is Flatten, also under the Layers menu. In GIMP, pull down the Layers menu and select Merge Down.

    9

Remove all of the color from the image by using Desaturate. in Photoshop, it is in the Adjustments menu under Image. In GIMP, Desaturate can be found in the Colors menu under the Image pull-down.

    10

Open the Levels control, which should be in the same menu as Desaturate. There are three small triangles across the bottom of the Levels control. Click and drag the right triangle towards the center; this move will fade the background to white. Move the left triangle in a similar distance.

    11

Experiment with the center triangle to find the best settings. It may be necessary to use a clone stamp or airbrush tool on areas that should be clear.
