How to Use the Canon 40D

How to Use the Canon 40D

The Canon 40D is a very advanced digital camera. It is an entry level professional camera that has several very useful features, including on-camera editing, advanced focusing features, preset functions and an advanced digital processor. To use this camera, you can get as technical or simple as you like. There are several upgrades, but not much has changed for users familiar with the 20D.

Instructions

    1

Charge the battery and install in the hand grip. Then turn on the camera using the switch at the bottom back of the camera body. The menu should appear in the LCD, and the smaller LCD on the top right of the camera will come on. This shows your battery power, film and camera settings and program mode.

    2

Turn on the AF-ON button to shoot the camera in auto-focus mode. This eliminates the need to focus the camera manually. The auto-focus comes on when the shutter is half pressed on many Canon models, but this sometimes causes problems when shooting because auto-focus comes on when not intended.

    3

Turn the program mode nob on the left-hand side to the camera mode you want to use. There are the familiar P, M, AV, TV modes. P allows you to set the aperture and shutter speed manually, AV allows you to set the aperture and maintain the shutter speed exposure, TV just the opposite, and M is a full manual mode. There are several other modes designed for certain types of shooting; flower for close-ups, running person for action shots, mountains for scenery landscapes and face for portraits. You can save your own configurations with the C1, C2, C3 icons.

    4

Aim your camera at a subject and compose your picture. You will notice your camera auto metering the subject. Adjust your exposure using one of the modes or by turning the round dial on the top of the right side of the camera or the larger dial on the back of the camera. This adjusts the shutter and aperture speeds depending on which mode you are in.

    5

Take your picture and store it in the digital memory. You can now enter the Live View mode to view this image on the screen and make adjustments to your next shot or turn on Live View mode to compose and adjust your subject before hand. Live View mode is available only on the P, M, TV, AV modes, but not the scene modes. It allows you to see your exposure levels, ISO speed, and bring up histograms and other useful tools.

    6

Attach the camera to your computer with a USB cable and install the utility software to download and edit your pictures on your own computer. You may also control the camera through your computer using Live Mode.

    7

Bring up the menu by pressing the menu button in the top left-hand corner on the back of the camera. In the menu, you can adjust metering modes, set functions, view pictures and change functions. You can also play or review pictures on the LCD screen with the play button on the back of the camera and delete pictures with a selection button on the back of the camera.
