How to Photograph Jewelry Against Fabric

How to Photograph Jewelry Against Fabric

Photographing jewelry against fabric is one of the best ways to display the individual beauty of the piece. It also tends to be the most effective setup for creating online sales displays. Taking pictures of jewelry is more difficult to do than it first seems because jewelry is shiny and that causes the pictures to have unattractive glare and blown light spots.

Instructions

    1

Arrange your fabric on a table near an uncovered North-facing window. North facing windows allow bright indirect sunlight to enter, so you won't have as much glare on the shiny parts of the jewelry. Adjust the fabric arrangement and table so that the light from the window is coming in slightly or completely from one side.

    2

Put an item under your fabric to give it a support structure for your jewelry. The item you use will depend upon the type of finished photo display look you want and the type of jewelry you're photographing. Necklaces can be draped over mound-shaped items, for example, whereas rings might display best on top of a slanted box.

    3

Polish the jewelry completely, then place it onto the fabric and support. Arrange it into a position you want.

    4

Use a makeup brush or empty syringe to brush or blow away any tiny particles of dust that may have settled while you were arranging the jewelry.

    5

Place something white or shiny on the other side of your fabric setup, opposite the window. This will work as a light reflector to fill in the shadows on the dark side of your photo. White reflectors are best for jewelry because they create soft highlight instead of intense glares. Printing paper, white drawing boards, and even white kitchen cutting boards work well as reflectors.

Prop the reflector up with a book, chair or other stationary object that will allow it to stay in place while you're taking the photo.

    6

Put your camera on a tripod for steadiness, and set the delayed timer to ensure you don't accidentally cause shaking when the photo is being taken. A two second delay is a good choice if your camera has that option. If your camera or lens has automatic vibration correction, turn that off while using the tripod.

    7

Focus the camera on the jewelry piece, then press the shutter button and remove your hand.
