How to Take Good Portraits at Home

How to Take Good Portraits at Home

Portraiture is one of the more exciting and intimate aspects of photography. Portraits can bring out an amazing array of emotions, both from the subject and the viewer. You don't need to have a gigantic studio with thousands of dollars worth of professional equipment to make a great portrait photo. In fact, you can do it at home with tools you may already have.

Instructions

Portrait Photography

    1

Choose the lens or focal length you want to use for the portrait. Generally speaking, portrait photographers like to use longer focal lengths because they a better at separating the subject from the background, and help to eliminate distracting elements in the frame. Choose a lens of 75mm or greater on SLR cameras for portraits.

Use the zoom feature on your point-and-shoot camera to zoom in on your subject.

    2

Select your location. You should use a place that has a simple background so it doesn't distract from your subject. After all, your subject is the whole point of portrait photography. Your location can be indoors; clear out the background by removing pictures and shelves from the walls, and moving furniture out of the frame.

Outdoors, use a longer focal length zoom lens on your camera. This accomplishes two things: the longer focal length separates your subject from the background by throwing the background out of focus; and the narrower field of view keeps the focus of the image on your subject and eliminates distracting elements in the frame. Avoid other people, animals, and other distracting elements in the background.

    3

Attach your camera to a tripod. It's generally a good idea to use a tripod to avoid camera shake that can occur from holding a camera. Using a tripod, however, is also preferable during portrait photography so you can use slower shutter speeds, longer focal length lenses and dimmer lights.

    4

Set up your lighting. There are basically two types of lighting in portrait photography.

Environmental--or ambient--lighting comes from a natural source. Use your foam core board to reflect sunlight onto your subject for a soft key (main) light. Keep the sun at a 45- to 90-degree angle behind your subject, and use the foamcore to reflect that light back onto your subject.

Controlled lighting generally occurs indoors in a studio. Lights are hung or put on stands and aimed at the subject. At home, use 1000-watt work lights you can buy at home improvement stores, and bounce the lights off the foamcore, aiming the reflected light at your subject. This will cast softer shadows for a more pleasant look.

    5

Move around. Allow your model to move and experiment with different poses. Don't lock yourself to one pose or one location. Let them enjoy and experiment with the environment. Step back from your subject and give them room to move around and feel comfortable. Have fun.
