How to Minimize Photo File Size

Today's digital cameras with imaging sensors ranging up to 21 megapixels are capable of producing some fairly large digital images. And while you may need all of the information and resolution come printing time, if you are using the image online or in a presentation, you can minimize the photo file size to speed up the process and help keep the overall size of the presentation or gallery from becoming too large. Just remember to save the minimized file as a version, or a new file from the original. This way, you still have the larger original file for future use or printing.

Open the photo you want to adjust by double-clicking the file. This will open the JPEG file into the editor of your choice.

In the menu toolbar select some variation of "Image size" or "Image properties." Each program changes the menu a little from program to program. You are looking for the option where you can reduce the resolution of your JPEG file.

Minimize your file size by changing the resolution, or dots per inch (DPI). When you are printing a JPEG photo you want the DPI to be as detailed as possible, at about 300. For computer or online uses, a DPI of 72 is more than enough.

After adjusting the DPI to 72, click "Save as". A new menu box will appear where you can select the compression level of the file, which will also help minimize the size of your photo file. In this case, since you have already reduced the file by two thirds, keep the setting at 7 to 9. Anything lower and you run the risk of the image displaying jagged lines. The scale runs from 1 to 12, with one being the lowest quality setting and 12 being the highest quality setting.
