How to Photograph Cars

Automobile manufacturers, classic car restorers and advertising agencies representing the car industry all have one thing in common: They all want the best photographs possible of the cars they represent. Some consider photographing cars an art form and by using their techniques, you can take great car shots, too.

Instructions

    1

Prepare the car first. Many elements come together when taking good car photographs, but the first rule of order is to get the car ready. Unless you're taking creative shots of old automobiles, the car should be polished and detailed in order to show well.

    2

Consider the lighting available when shooting cars. If you're outdoors, the best lighting will be in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun's rays cast a horizontal light on the car, accentuating its features and bringing out details. Avoid shooting when the sun is directly overhead to reduce washed-out colors and harsh shadows.

    3

Steady your camera by using a tripod. Car photography depends upon sharp pictures and that means eliminating movement. A tripod is essential because it is impossible to hold your camera perfectly still. You can use a fast shutter if a tripod is unavailable but you may sacrifice color saturation.

    4

Polarize your outside car photographs with a filter to bring out glossy reflections and reduce unwanted glare. In addition, a polarizing filter is acceptable with both color and black and white photography. A circular polarizer is adjustable by turning the filter to suit the available lighting.

    5

Shoot low. A favorite shot of car enthusiasts, designed to enhance the look of power, results from lowering your camera to bumper level and shooting upwards. This gives the viewer the impression of the car bearing down upon them. In addition, this shot is popular when taken from different angles.

    6

Set a mood when photographing cars. Consider the feeling you want the viewer to experience. New cars benefit from lots of color and shine, and vintage cars look the best when photographed against a background that suits their age.

    7

Experiment by taking photographs of sections of a car when you want to emphasize certain elements. Not all photographs need to include the entire automobile. The chrome grill of a Jaguar, shot from a low angle, showing the leaping cat prominently, captures the feeling of speed and agility.
