Photographing an article allows you to build a portfolio of tear-sheets for your professional writing career or simply preserve a valuable article about something important in your life. A copy stand is designed specifically to photograph two-dimensional artwork and provides the best option for capturing the details of your article. A copy stand keeps the camera steady while allowing the photographer to move the attached adjustable light sources to ensure no glare is present and the article is evenly lit for the best reproduction possible.
Instructions
- 1
Clip the article, also referred to as a tear-sheet, from the original publication and mount it to a piece of mat board with a thin layer of rubber cement or a glue stick. Repeat this step for multiple articles to take pictures of multiple articles at once. Adhering the articles to the mat board will cause them to lie flat during the photographic process and there will be no movement of the article during the photographing process.
2Set up your camera on a copy stand. A copy stand can be found for a temporary use at most university or community art classes or workshops. Most professional photography and art supply stores will also carry a copy stand if you wish to purchase one. You can also create your own copy stand. A flat piece of wood or heavy plastic serves as the base where the article will rest, and then the camera is placed on a holder directly above the base and a light with adjustable arms is attached to either side of the base.
3Place the article directly underneath the camera holder and move the lights until no glare is present on the article.
4Take several test shots of the article and check the images to be sure you can see the words clearly. Use a digital camera SLR, or single lens reflex, camera if possible. This will give you the most flexibility in exposures and focal lengths to properly capture the article's text and images.
5Adjust the lights and camera location according to your test shots and repeat Step 4 until the article photographs properly. Continue shooting the article and add any additional pages once you have obtained the perfect shot capturing all the necessary elements of the article. Photograph any additional articles at this time, as the camera setup should photograph the additional work at the same settings.
