What Are Stereoview Cabinets?

What Are Stereoview Cabinets?

Stereoview pictures, also known as stereoscopics, were a prominent form of entertainment and education in the early 20th century. These pictures, mounted on cards, had visual depth resembling 3D images when viewed through a special lens. Teachers and wealthy families often purchased entire cabinets of these images, for viewing and storage, which included subjects like distant cities and interesting people. Keystone, the major manufacturer of stereoview cards and cabinets, had several series, among them "Tour of the World."

History

Stereoview images were popular in the U.S. between the 1850s and 1930s. Businesses used staff photographers to gather the images, or bought negatives from other companies. Keystone View Company was the only purveyor of stereoscopics after 1920. They famously attained images taken from the end of the First World War, which increased their popularity enough to make them a world-wide phenomenon. At the height of their popularity, Keystone alone had 50,000 prints available.

Construction

Stereoview cabinets were constructed from a hard wood, such as oak. Keystone made different styles, but many were made in three sections, with paneled doors covering drawers for stereographic cards on the top. The middle section featured smaller drawers for slides and rested on an elevated base of four legs. Cabinets could range to just over four feet in height, with a depth and width of about a foot and a half, depending on the size of the collection.

Types of Images

Like encyclopedias, stereoview images sold best in boxed sets. They often included informative text on the back describing the image. The first Albumen images produced were cream and white. Over time, the image mounts got heavier and the images became darker, ranging from yellowish orange to silver by the 1930s. Pictures from Yellowstone National Park, hotels, Presidential excursions, train stations and many other points of interest were used to promote education and family entertainment.

Decline

In the age of the Internet and cable TV, it's difficult to imagine gathering around to take turns viewing a tiny image in three dimensions. Stereoview cabinets remained popular as an educational and diagnostic tool for eye problems as their entertainment value dwindled with the arrival of radio and movies. New images were being produced well into the 1970s, but by 1980 the stores had been ransacked or donated to the California Museum of Photography. Cabinets are still available from antique dealers.
