How to Convert Digital Files Into Slides

Artists and professional photographers entering juried shows are often asked to include slide representations of their work for critique. While most artists do not have the expensive equipment needed to do this at home, digital files can be used to create 35 mm film slides. The easiest way to convert your digital files into film slides is with the help of a high-quality photo development shop.

Instructions

    1

Choose a photography printing service bureau that provides digital file to slide service. You can find several online by doing a key word search on "digital to slide." Look for a service provider who can provide high resolution slides for a reasonable cost. Prices can range anywhere from $2 per slide up to $8 per slide. Inexpensive isn't necessarily best; make sure you review their FAQs to find out what resolution they print with, what type of film they print to and what process they use to convert your digital images to slide images. Some companies will simply print your images as standard 4x6 prints and then scan those prints. This means that the quality of the scan you receive back will be directly proportional to the quality of the print they create.

    2

Optimize your digital files to get the best final result. Based on your research, use an image editing software to optimize your digital files for printing at the resolution and size that the printing shop recommends. If in doubt, call and speak to a person to clarify. Editing your digital files isn't a requirement, but it can make the difference between receiving a quality slide with a great image and receiving a slide with a distorted and fuzzy image. If you are not skilled in using an image editing software, look for a shop that offers "digital retouching" as an add-on service and pay to have the files edited. This extra cost will be worth it to receive high-quality slides.

    3

Upload your files to the photography printing service's server. You'll need to follow their instructions to complete this process. Most companies will have an upload fact sheet available that will give you detailed instructions including: which file types they accept, their minimum resolution requirements, and step-by-step instructions for uploading files to their server. They may also offer you the option to send them a CD with your files if you are unable to use the Internet to upload your files. After uploading your files, complete the payment process. Most services will return ship your slides to you within one week of uploading.
