Light Box Instructions

If you've ever looked at an ad for something that seemed to show the product suspended over a blank field and wondered how it was done, you've witnessed the effects of a light box. Light boxes are tools used by photographers to control the level of light used on a product to eliminate or diminish shadows and they can be quite expensive if you're buying them from photography supply shops. Fortunately, you can use white foam core poster board and tape to make your own and save a lot of money.

Instructions

    1

Lay a piece of foam core down flat on your workspace; this will be the back of your light box. Attach another piece of foam core to create a right angle along one of the long sides of the first sheet; this will be the top of your light box. The two pieces of foam core should be flush with each other; secure them with the tape.

    2

Attach another piece of foam core along the opposite side of the original sheet and secure it with the tape; this will be the bottom of your light box.

    3

Slide the two remaining pieces of foam core between the top and bottom of the light box. They should be flush with all three edges they come in contact with and there will be about a 10-inch overhang. Secure these two pieces with tape. Use the straight edge and pencil to mark off the 10-inch overhang on either side and use the razor knife to remove them.

    4

Cut a notch that is 2 inches deep and 5 inches across on one long edge and one short edge of the outside of the box. Assemble the shop light and clamp it to the box at one of the notches. Plug the light in and turn it on.
