Glamour Photography Tutorial

Glamour Photography Tutorial

Glamour photography is more than just the kiosk at the mall that made this type of photography popular during the 1980s. Incorporating the basic principles of lighting and using stylists from high-end fashion photography genres allows you to take an ordinary portrait session and reach glamorous proportions. Planning, efficiency and a talented professional staff will help you achieve the glamour photography images you are looking to create.

Instructions

    1

Hire a stylist who specializes in hair and makeup in a style that you like and hope to capture. For example, if you are photographing models for a glamorous wedding shoot, be sure your stylist is proficient in the hair styling trends for today's brides. Be sure their make-up techniques also match your preferences and be sure they are aware of how to apply make-up for intense lighting situations. Additional make up is required for photo shoots as the lights may overpower traditional make up applications.

    2

Hire a model or ask someone who embodies the glamorous look you are envisioning for your photo shoot. Be sure he or she is comfortable posing for the camera and has experience working with photographers in a studio setting.

    3

Create a shooting plan prior to beginning your shoot. Study various professional images that achieve the look you are striving for and make sketches based on these ideas and your original vision. Be sure to note where the lights will be placed, what type of lighting will be used and where the model will stand in relation to the camera.

    4

Choose a lighting situation that mimics the look you are striving to achieve. Many glamour photographs use a high-key lighting situation that casts highlights on the hair and lights the model with a bright white light and even tone so very few shadows are present. To create the highlight effect, place one smaller light from behind the subject, creating a light rim or halo effect around the subject.

    5

Place the main light sources on either side of the subject for an even light across the face and use a soft-box or portrait umbrella with the light source to diffuse, or soften the light as it falls on the subject.

    6

Test the lighting and props with an assistant that is the same size and height as your model. Using an assistant to set up your studio lighting and props will save time and money, as models are usually paid by the hour, as are stylists. Take multiple test shots and analyze them on your computer while placing the lights and props until the look you envision is achieved.

    7

Use upbeat, hip music in your studio on the day of your shoot to help your model relax for the camera and to maintain a rhythm while shooting. Be sure there are refreshments for the models and stylists and that you work fast and efficiently to execute your photo shoot.

    8

Photograph the subject from multiple angles and be sure to change the lighting throughout your shoot according to your plan. Achieving maximum results for your shoot requires planning, efficiency and a talented crew of stylists, models and assistants.
