How to Be a Photographer & Shoot Models

How to Be a Photographer & Shoot Models

Being a fashion photographer is considered by some to be a glamorous field. Ads in magazines and on billboards bring lots of attention to photographers. And shooting beautiful men and women in exotic locations is an alluring way for some people to spend time. Fashion photography is an extremely competitive field. It is also a very lucrative field. It takes more than a simple desire to photograph models to make these dreams come true. It takes hard work, dedication and a bit of luck to make it in this field.

Instructions

    1

Develop your own artistic sensibility. A photographer's aesthetic is key to his reputation. Being a photographer requires as much artistry as being a painter. As an artist you need to develop your own personal style and taste. Immerse yourself in the world of fashion. Read magazines, study fashion photographs, and attend fashion shows and galleries.

    2

Develop your technical skill as a photographer. Some photographers have formal education and training, while others are self-taught. Either way, skill and experience come with taking many photographs. Learn how to use the appropriate camera equipment and lighting design.

    3

Create your portfolio. This is the photographer's resume and is crucial to working as a professional fashion photographer. Include only your best work in your portfolio. You can use 4-by 5-inch or 8- by-10-inch photographs. If you have been published in a magazine, use the actual page, called a "tear sheet."

    4

Organize a list of picture editors at different magazines. Know their names and know the nest way to contact them. Submit your work to the picture editors. You may have to do this multiple times before an editor will accept your work.

    5

Secure a photo agent. They shop the photographers work to the magazines on their behalf. When meeting with agents treat it as you would a job interview. They are selective about who they represent and you want to make the best impression possible.

    6

Exhibit your work in a gallery. If your intention is present your personal artistic style instead of working for commercial advertising you need a place to show your work. There are gallery representatives who will evaluate your portfolio and consider showcasing your photographs. The gallery representatives can be as selective as picture editors and photo agents.

    7

Nurture your people skills. As your reputation grows and your work becomes more known, the more people will want to work with you. A modeling shoot is similar to making a TV show or commercial movie. There are lots of personalities to deal with. This can require a nurturing touch, strong direction, patience, and most importantly, the ability to get people to do ask you ask them to do.
