There are two main types of studio lights: continuous or strobe. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages and a photographer must decide which is more suitable for her purposes. In general, you do not need different lights for digital vs. film, unless you have a large format camera with a digital scanning back that requires a continuous light source instead of strobes.
Continuous Lights
Continuous lights are those that, once turned on, stay on until turned off, as opposed to the flash bursts of strobe lights. From the most basic to the most advanced, the main types are:
Photofloods--tungsten bulbs designed to deliver a high-intensity light;
Quartz halogen--bulbs made of quartz filled with halogen gas;
Fluorescent--light arrays or banks designed to deliver a whiter light than regular fluorescent bulbs; and
LED--arrays of light-emitting diodes, the latest technology in continuous lighting; HMI types frequently use in filming movies.
Advantages of Continuous Lights
The main advantage is that a photographer can see shadows that will appear in the photograph before it is taken. Continuous light sources are usually much less expensive than strobe units, though some of the newest technology can be quite costly. Fluorescents and LEDs are by far the most expensive continuous light sources. Continuous lights are well suited for slow shutter speeds used in product photography.
Disadvantages of Continuous Lights
Photofloods and quartz halogen lights are extremely inefficient; much energy is lost as heat. Wiring in older buildings should be inspected before using these lights. There is a danger of burn injuries and fire. Models can get very uncomfortable under these lights and makeup will run. Some product subjects may melt. Halogen bulbs can actually explode. Color quality is lost as the bulbs age. Fluorescent and LED types, however, run much cooler with more stable color quality and more energy-efficiency.
Strobe Lights
Strobe lights provide a flash or sudden burst of light triggered by the camera. Light units, or heads, are mounted on stands in the studio. Cooler, weaker modeling lights are mounted on the heads next to the flash bulb or tube to provide the photographer an idea of what the lighting will look like in the photo. Two main types of strobe lights are as follows:
Monolights--flash, modeling light, reflector and power source are all housed in the head and can be very heavy; and
Power pack units--heads are lighter because they are plugged into a central power source and they are more expensive than monolights.
Advantages of Strobe Lights
Strobe lights are cooler to use than the most common continuous light sources such as photofloods and quartz halogens. Models are more comfortable and there is no risk of injury or fire. They are more energy-efficient and are less of a drain on electrical wiring. The flash of light is much more intense than continuous light, so stop-motion photos are possible.
Disadvantages of Strobe Lights
Even with modeling lights, shadows are not the same as will appear in the photograph. Photographers must often check the photo after it is taken and readjust the lights to achieve the desired effect. Although continuous light sources can be quite expensive, basic-level strobe lighting equipment is much more expensive than basic-level continuous lighting. Strobe lighting equipment is also not very convenient to take on location, though portable light sets are available that makes that easier.
